The Biodiversity Conservation Branch has five sections with a broad mix of policy and program responsibilities. The sections are:

  • Conservation Incentives & Design
  • Conservation Policy
  • Environmental Stewardship
  • Ecosystems and Climate Change
  • Tasmania: Caring for our Country

The Branch is part of the Australian Government Land and Coasts Division, comprising staff from the Department of Sustainability Environment, Water, Population and Communities and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry who work together to implement Caring for our Country.

The Conservation Incentives and Design section provides strategic research, analysis and advice on the use of economic and market-based incentives for conservation and on approaches for landscape scale conservation. The section’s work is linked to the Caring for our Country Initiative, and also to broader cross-jurisdictional conservation policy issues. The CID team undertakes a strategic approach to NRM investment, strategies, programs and projects that achieve biodiversity outcomes and contribute to socio-economic wellbeing.

Our work includes:

  • Landscape design and investment planning for improved biodiversity conservation, and integrating with connectivity, resilience and ecosystem services principles;
  • The National Wildlife Corridors Plan;
  • Strategic reporting on the Caring for our Country ‘biodiversity and natural icons’ National Priority Area;
  • Conservation incentives and market-based approaches to support private land conservation, including national approaches to conservation covenanting.
