Description

AWF is seeking a motivated and enthusiatic proffesional with an ecological background and project management skills to support its Species Protection Project.

The Species Protection Grants (SPG) are designed to provide support to partners across the continent to stem the current onslaught of poaching. The SPO will work with the AWF’s Senior Director of Conservation Science, conservation partners and other staff to ensure efficient and effective design and implementation of AWF’s SPGs and, secondarily, on implementation of AWF’s overall conservation programme.

 

Responsibilities

  • Assist in identifying potential partners and creating a pipeline of potential species projects for AWF support
  • Undertake due diligence on species projects and potential partners/sub-grantees for AWF support and submit to supervisor in timely manner
  • Draft Terms of Reference and participate in reviewing project sub-grant agreements
  • Create and update overall project plans, identify and suggest strategies for rectifying risks and delays, and mitigating challenges
  • Periodically visit project sites supported by AWF
  • Keep a log of all projects supported, their disbursement and reporting timelines
  • Monitor compliance with SPGs and fulfillment of grant requirements and work with sub-grantees to ensure that the funds are implemented as planned and are having the best impact possible
  • Work with relevant AWF departments (e.g. finance and procurement) to ensure timely and effective running of AWF SPGs to ensure prompt payment and reporting at all levels
  • Document management lessons learnt and experiences in order to improve on how AWF species grants and programs are implemented
  • Prepare and submit timely monthly and other reports on SPGs
  • Ensure adequate and timely reporting by sub-grantees / partners
  • Provide support in species related proposal writing and fundraising
  • Support refinement of all elements of AWF’s Conservation Science and applications as appropriate
  • Provide relevant M&E and impact data on a timely basis

 

Qualifications

  • 5+ years post degree direct experience in conservation or field ecology, especially species work, in Africa
  • Experience managing projects with annual budgets in excess of $500,000
  • Knowledge of species and landscape conservation and management processes
  • Experience engaging and consulting with partners and other stakeholders. Experience managing and administering grants, either as a recipient or grantor
  • Ability to communicate effectively through timely high-quality scientific reports
  • Ability to network strategically and communicate effectively with a wide group of partners, including proactive sharing of information and reporting
  • Significant dexterity with computer packages including word, data storage, statistical analyses, reporting and internet skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Good organizational skills
