Reporting to the DSF Project Leader and an Advisory Committee, the Project Manager will be responsible for managing a complex energy project to develop a blue print for Canada’s energy future. This project is a collaboration between the David Suzuki Foundation and other partners.

The Project Manager holds responsibility for ensuring the development and delivery of a blue print for Canada’s energy future, based on a triple analysis of energy availability, economic feasibility and environmental sustainability. The results must also meet public acceptability. This is a leadership position requiring homed energy sector expertise, significant project management experience, superb communications and negotiation skills as well as political sophistication.

Location: To be determined, note that project team members will be located in cities across Canada.

Contract Term: Initially a one year contract to deliver the first phase of the project with strong possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities: The Project Manager will plan, organize, direct and delegate the execution of all work associated with the project. They will develop and support an effective project team, manage key relationships, control and report on project resources, and manage project communication and risks.

FIRST PHASE:
In the initial phase of this project, over the one year term of this contract, the Project Manager will lead work with multiple stakeholders to define the project’s scope and will develop a delivery framework and project team.

1. Project Definition:
  • Define the scope of the projects in collaboration with the DSF Project Leader and Advisory Committee;
  • Create a detailed work plan which identifies and sequences the activities needed to successfully complete the project;
  • Determine the resources (time, money, equipment, etc) required to complete the project;
  • Develop a schedule for project completion that effectively allocates the resources to the activities;
  • Review the project schedule with the DSF Project Leader and all other staff that will be affected by the project activities; revise the schedule as required;
  • Determine the objectives and measures upon which the project will be evaluated at its completion;
  • Secure project authorizations from the DSF Project Leader and Advisory Committee to launch the project;

2. Project Resourcing:
  • In consultation with the DSF Project Leader and Advisory Committee; recruit, interview and select a Project Team of staff and/or volunteers with appropriate skills for the project activities;
  • Provide leadership and communicate project vision to the Project team to ensure completion in accordance with Project requirements and intent;
  • Manage project staff and/or volunteers according to the established policies and practices of the partner organizations;
  • Supervise and direct the Project team members during planning, development, delivery and evaluation of the project;
  • Manage performance of project team members in regards to this project.
3. Project Delivery:
In this initial contract it is anticipated that the Project Manager will transition the emphasis of work from planning and resourcing to project delivery, control and evaluation. The extent to which this applies will be determined in the project scoping and planning.


Qualifications
  • Graduate Degree in Physical Sciences or Engineering or equivalent;
  • Strong knowledge of energy and environment solutions, systems engineering, operations fundamentals, and general business operations;
  • Strong personal interest in energy sustainability required;
  • Demonstrated competence in leading multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral partnerships and teams;
  • Proven and effective negotiation and group facilitation skills.
  • 10 years of related work experience, including at least 5 years in a project management role.
  • Proven track record in the management of multifunctional projects;
  • A recognized project management designation is a valuable asset;
  • Relevant understanding of project accounting and financial management tools;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate personnel toward the achievement of a goal;
  • Non-profit sector experience an asset;
  • Superior verbal and communication and presentation skills;
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and other relevant programs;
  • Bilingual English / French is an asset
