Position Description
 
This individual is responsible for both project design and managing the design and engineering of small commercial solar photovoltaic projects. The Senior Project Engineer (SPE) is also responsible for ensuring design quality control through regular interaction with our dealers in the residential space.
 
The Senior Project Engineer (SPE) will provide project management and design consultation for all projects in the Small Systems business unit. The SPE will be the technical expert for electrical and structural design aspects of the project to ensure engineering integrity, as well as successful approval processes with associated stakeholders. The SPE is also responsible for maintaining a project schedule and ensuring that the engineering work remains on schedule. The SPE will work closely with our operations resources to ensure project execution. The SPE will report directly to the Vice President of Project Engineering and System Implementation. The position is based out of our Belmont, CA office and travel is expected.
 
Responsibilities
 
This individual is responsible for the following tasks:
1.      Attend site qualification visits to collect information required to complete the design and permitting of small commercial solar electric systems.
2.      Oversee the development of structural and electrical designs for net-metered small commercial systems that meet all national, state and local code requirements as well as customer defined requirements.
3.      Manage engineering subcontract resources to meet deadlines and milestones for a portfolio of projects.  
4.      Obtain design approvals from professionally licensed engineering sub-contractors.
5.      Create professional design drawings showing the structural, electrical and site plan design of small commercial systems using AutoCAD.
6.      Manage subcontractor submission of drawings to the appropriate agency in order to obtain the necessary permits to allow for construction of large-scale solar electric systems.
7.      Coordinate the development of a bill of material for each project based on the final approved design.
8.      Provide technical input to support the interconnection application and utility approval process.
9.      Perform team management activities such as employee reviews, interviewing potential candidates, and adding resources to further develop the department.
10. Provide the technical knowledge and support needed to deploy new workflow processes meant to eliminate fixed costs and encourage scale in the residential and small commercial markets.
11. Serve as the technical expert for engineering team and final design decisions.
12. Communicate with partners working on the design, engineering, and permitting of small commercial projects and certify their adherence to quality control standards.
13. Communicate and influence parties cross-functionally within SunEdison.
 
 
Skills & Experience
 
SunEdison is seeking an individual with the following skills and experience. On the job training will be provided for any person who qualifies for this position but does not meet all of the following requirements. 
·         A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Other engineering disciplines are considered based on experience and skill set.
·         A minimum of 3 years experience working in an engineering capacity for a commercial photovoltaic company, or designing commercial distributed generation systems. 
·         A minimum 3 years experience managing an engineering team consisting of 3 or more employees. 
·         Knowledgeable in standard applied codes such as the NEC and UBC.
·         Strong knowledge of photovoltaic system design and optimizing system components for energy production.
·         Strong knowledge of electrical and structural design components and manufacturers.
·         Experienced in the use of energy modeling systems for photovoltaic applications and the variables/constraints related to energy production.
·         Good working knowledge of standard utility process for interconnection approval and design requirements.
·         Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD 2007-2011 software for 2D architectural and electrical plans.
·         Strong organizational skills to manage the activities of subcontractors and maintain project schedules.
·         Ability to work independently of your direct supervisors and to manage other resources at remote locations.
·         Ability to effectively operate with high energy and flexibility in a fast-paced, constantly evolving team environment.
·         Self-motivated with the ability to manage diverse relationships and multiple, complex projects and tasks simultaneously.
·         Creativity and critical thinking skills necessary to develop better processes and tackle new challenges.
·         Good working knowledge of MS Office programs, specifically Word and Excel.
·         Experience designing with medium voltage equipment would be a valuable asset for this position.
