The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.

Mexico’s Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (M-REDD) Project, is a 5-year initiative funded by the United States Agency for International Development that will support Mexico’s REDD-readiness process by establishing and/or strengthening policy, institutional and technical capacity building, financing and other core aspects required to ensure the successful implementation of REDD+ in Mexico. Under this project, the Rainforest Alliance’s Climate, TREES, Communications, and Evaluation and Research programs will coordinate to support Mexico’s design and implementation of REDD+.

Position Summary: 

The Senior Project Associate, Chihuahua will serve as Rainforest Alliance’s principle point of contact for M-REDD activities in the state of Chihuahua among relevant stakeholders -- including communities, government institutions, consortium partners, private sector actors, civil society organizations, the academic sector, forest advisors and consultants -- ensuring successful implementation of project work, achievement of agreed goals and successful coordination with ongoing TREES Program activities among forest communities in the state. Specifically, s/he will be responsible for coordinating fieldwork to test REDD+ models and demonstration activities and spearheading M-REDD+’s approach to influencing subnational REDD+ policy in the state of Chihuahua. S/he will oversee the design, implementation and follow up of demonstration work at local/regional scales within the boundaries of the pilot site and influence areas in the state of Chihuahua. S/he will work closely with the TREES North Region Coordinator under the supervision of the Field Operations Manager, and will coordinate with key M-REDD staff and partners in the project consortium, particularly The Nature Conservancy and its appointed Chief-of-Party. S/he will supervise one staff, the Project Associate, Chihuahua.

Responsibilities: 
  • Coordinate activities in the state of Chihuahua associated with the Mexico-REDD project supported by USAID and led by The Nature Conservancy;
  • Assist in the elaboration of operational work plans to be agreed under M-REDD in coordination with project counterparts, the TREES North Region Coordinator and the TREES Field Operations Manager, Mexico;
  • Coordinate, prepare and implement demonstration work within the Chihuahua REDD+ pilot site; with particular focus on the Sierra Raramuri region;
  • Contribute to design and lead promotion of calls for proposals, follow up with project implementers, guide the elaboration of administrative and technical reports, and supervise the fieldwork of the M-REDD Project Associate in the state of Chihuahua;
  • Provide policy guidance and expertise to local and state stakeholders and government agencies on the development and implementation of REDD+ programs, policies, and incentive structures;
  • Contribute to the development of credible and transparent institutional, economic, legal and regulatory REDD+ programs, policies, and incentive structures;
  • Contribute to strengthening understanding of Social and Environmental Standards, and their inclusion within REDD+ strategies within Chihuahua;
  • Assist the Field Operations Manager and oversee the activities of the M-REDD Pilot Project Associate, Chihuahua to prepare and monitor work plans, budgets, and cash flow projections in support of technical assistance and training delivered to stakeholders;
  • Coordinate with consultants on agreement scope of work and subsequent deliverables;
  • Provide technical materials for regular reporting to counterparts and donor agencies;
  • Assist in the planning and delivery of workshops, trainings and conferences associated with M-REDD project activities in the region of concern;
  • Support the development of sub-national REDD+ readiness, and widely communicate solutions and best practices;
  • Assist in developing new and innovative technical, institutional and policy approaches related to the TREES program, the M-REDD project, and other initiatives in support of Rainforest Alliance’s mission;
  • Assist in identifying new funding opportunities and support proposal development in coordination with the TREES Field Operations Manager, Mexico; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree  in forestry, climate change, environmental science, natural resource economics, rural development or related field; Master’s degree preferred;
  • 5 - 7 years experience working in the Mexican forestry sector, with experience in northern  region of Mexico with CFEs Field work experience at the Raramuri Sierra is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years experience in project management;
  • Proven record in one or more of the following areas: forest management, forest carbon, community forestry, forest certification, forest policy, biodiversity conservation;
  • Experience with technical and financial oversight of government-funded projects, experience with bi- or multilaterally funded projects preferred;
  • Skilled in project planning, capable of managing and reporting a variety of tasks against set targets and deadlines;
  • Knowledge of Mexican forest policy and key stakeholders;
  • Ability to effectively work with a range of actors -- from community partners, to government officials, to private sector representatives and technical specialists – in sometimes difficult and complex settings;
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team;
  • Fluency in Spanish required, native speaker preferred;
  • English proficiency preferred
  • Strong word processing, spreadsheet and computer skills;
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to adapt to multi-cultural situations; and
  • Ability and willingness to travel a minimum of 35% of the time within Mexico, and to work under sometimes difficult conditions in remote settings.
Salary: 

Commensurate with experience.
