Senior Programme Officer (AD886)

Climate Change and Biodiversity | Permanent, full-time, Technical/Professional Management

Salary in the range of £39,000 - £46,000 depending on skills and competencies

Closing date: 2015-05-04

We are looking for a highly motivated and technically experienced Senior Programme Officer to work in the Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme. The Programme aims to provide authoritative information to support decision-making at the intersection of climate change and biodiversity conservation policies: its work covers the impacts of climate change and climate-related policy on biodiversity, and the role of ecosystems in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The appointee will work with the Head of Programme and other senior staff to balance the demands on the Programme, meet its many project commitments, and shape the future of the Programme’s work.

The Senior Programme Officer will play a leading role within the Programme and will have opportunities to drive the development and implementation of projects, to participate within an international arena and to work alongside leading experts in the sector. S/he will lead the development of new projects and initiatives that support effective decision making on biodiversity and climate change policy, and will help to determine the strategic direction of the Programme. Work will include managing staff and work flows, leading on the development and implementation of major projects and representing the Centre to external audiences and partners. The thematic focus of the work will cover a range of topics, including impacts on biodiversity from, and the role of ecosystems in some or all of the following: reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), other approaches to climate change mitigation (including biofuels), and ecosystem based adaptation to climate change. The role will involve extensive international networking and collaboration within an engaging team environment.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working at the science/policy interface in the field of climate change or biodiversity and a good understanding of the intersection between climate change and biodiversity conservation issues. S/he should also have experience of leading and managing the implementation of projects and have proven experience of managing staff. S/he will be an intelligent, well organised team player, with the ability to work under pressure whilst delivering on multiple projects.

In return, we will provide the successful candidate with the challenge of working on high profile projects, where your work really makes a difference to the field of conservation in an area aligned to our strategic aims and broader global initiatives. In addition to training and development opportunities, we offer a competitive salary and benefits package, including generous pension contributions.

If you are looking for a rewarding and challenging post where you can impress us with your technical expertise, excellent leadership and development skills and teamwork, while contributing to efforts to safeguard global biodiversity, we want to hear from you. Please complete a WCMC application form and submit it with a CV and short covering letter through the link below by the closing date of 4 May 2015.

Please note that this is not a UN post.
