WCMC is a UK charity, based in Cambridge, which supports the United Nations Environment Programme. We work in collaboration with UNEP, under the banner of UNEP-WCMC. Our mission is to evaluate and highlight the many values of biodiversity and put authoritative biodiversity knowledge at the centre of decision-making. Since our establishment in the 1970s, the Centre has been at the forefront of the compilation, management, analysis and dissemination of global biodiversity information, and has an outstanding record of achievement.

WCMC are now seeking a permanent Senior Programme Officer to work with us.

The role

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Programme Officer within our Marine Assessment and Decision Support programme. This role will play a pivotal role in the strategic, scientific, technical, and operational development and execution of our work. Working closely with the Head of Programme and our Marine team, you will lead and support on the development of key initiatives, including a Global Data Partnership for Marine and Coastal Ecosystems.

Key responsibilities

As Senior Programme Officer, you will take responsibility for leading on, developing and delivering our growing portfolio of projects related to marine environmental monitoring, assessment and planning. You will work effectively with our Head of Programme to ensure that our work aligns with both our strategic aims and broader global initiatives, and will apply your proven fundraising experience to develop and secure relevant projects.

The candidate

You will hold a postgraduate qualification in (MSc or higher) in marine science, ecology, conservation biology or a related discipline and will be skilled at using your scientific knowledge and principles to inform decision-making at a range of scales. We work extensively internationally and your experience will reflect the skills required to do this well, including your experience of working with relevant international conventions and proficiency in at least one UN language other than English. Furthermore, you will have an understanding of the essential characteristics of successful partnership-building and will be able to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively.
