Clean Air/Climate Change Advocacy, Community Organizing and Outreach      
Work with a diverse cross section of the community in and near the three parks to develop active allies and generate grassroots and political support for state and federal policy that reduces emissions associated with air pollution and global warming.
 
Provide support to NPCA staff and the Program Managers, providing illustrations and justifications for supporting clean air, alternative energy and climate change policies at the state, regional, and federal levels. California’s leaders will continue to play a key role in evolving state and national clean air policy, and the program coordinator is responsible for positively influencing that role, through local rules and regulations, state legislation and regulation and federal initiatives. The ultimate goal of this position is to reduce emissions by promoting energy efficiency, alternative transportation and alternative energy options. 
 
Establish collaborative working relationships/coalitions with local park stakeholders. Manage and build a list of local activists who can be effectively called upon to support the work of the three parks.

Coordination with Yosemite and Sequoia and Kings Canyon
Working closely with the Central Valley Program Manager, maintain a positive proactive collaboration with NPS park administrators on education, awareness, outreach and in-park clean energy demonstration solutions (such as expanded clean transit systems).Act as a coordinator with staff from the three parks on joint projects that advance the development of the NPS Climate Friendly Park Initiative and meet the strategic direction of work laid out in the grant funding this work.

Communications
Work with the Central Valley Program Manager to build and cultivate media relations that result in frequent coverage of the impacts of air pollution, global warming and the efforts of NPCA to raise issue awareness.

Community Education
Work with educational partners to engage both adult and youth audiences regarding the impacts of global warming to the three parks and the planet.  Work with various coalition and organization partners to have unified, directed political strength focused both on state and federal policy makers. Advocate for air quality improvements needed in the national parks.
 
Using the three parks as the “poster children,” develop outreach materials that put forth a compelling public message on air pollution and climate threats to the park, and directly relate the importance of developing stronger legal protections.

Minimum Work Schedule: Seventeen hours per week, flexible schedule available. Significant regional travel required for meetings and events. National travel required approximately twice a year for meetings and retreats.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BA or BS degree or equivalent experience in political science, government, environmental science or related field desired.
  • Experience in community organizing, conservation advocacy, resource management, media relations, or education. Preference for familiarity with environmental issues related to national parks in California.
  • Experience and familiarity with clean air and climate issues and regulatory frameworks globally, nationally and locally.
  • Experience and familiarity with congressional and state lawmaking process and some familiarity with California congressional delegation and staff preferred.
  • Proven excellent written and oral communications skills, including one on one, in groups, and in public presentations.
  • Strong commitment to National Park System protection, with significant knowledge of national parks preferred.
  • Capacity to work effectively in teams to organize tasks, to set and observe priorities, and to maintain schedules
  • Proven ability to build relationships with a wide array of people and organizations across political and interest boundaries
  • Strong strategic skills to implement park advocacy programs and implement effective programs and campaigns.
  • Effective software skills including: effectively manage campaign assets and contacts (MS Excel), competently conduct research through the Internet, ability to use word processing (MS Word), the ability to edit webpage content strongly preferred, and competence with document design preferred (MS publisher).
