Senior Political Advisor

To be located in either Dakar, DRC or Johannesburg

Greenpeace Africa is currently seeking to employ a Senior Political Advisor to join the programmes department, based in one of three African locations.

Our ideal candidate needs to be politically aware, a good communicator and must have existing relationships and networks across various civil sectors that can support the development and roll out of Greenpeace’s Oceans and Agriculture campaigns locally and globally.  The candidate also has to be dedicated to the type of work Greenpeace does. The successful candidate must be able to perform the following duties:

Job Specification

  • Lobby and advocate for the political aims of the Greenpeace Africa’s oceans and agriculture campaigns in different forum.
  • Be able to develop the necessary policy specific documents and political positions for the campaigns as and when needed.  
  • Work together with different members within the programmes unit to produce scenarios and political roadmaps that will be used to deliver the strategic objectives and goals for each campaign. Be able to lobby and advocate key targets, opponents and allies on behalf of Greenpeace Africa at different political engagement opportunities, events, etc.
  • Proactively identify and establish new internal and external networks for each campaign.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of recent and relevant environmental, agricultural, legislative, and political developments happening on the continent, to ensure that Greenpeace Africa remains relevant and dynamic.
  • Work together with the Head of Programme Function to develop a political programme of activity and manage the political budget based on this plan
  • Ensure coherence and synergy exists between Greenpeace Africa’s various campaign strategies at the local, regional, continental and global level. To identify opportunities where political and legal achievements in Africa can contribute to the global oceans and agriculture campaign objectives and work with the relevant regional and global teams to implement them.
  • Ensure that knowledge and information about each campaign is captured and shared with teams, and political opportunities are shared across campaigns.
  • Become a Greenpeace Africa ambassador who embodies and speaks to the political vision and values of the organization publically.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Must have a proven track record of experience, knowledge and skills in policy development and political negotiation in Africa at the highest level.
  • Must have excellent networks within different governments and among, policy makers at various levels, working relationships in West and East Africa beneficial.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills essential.
  • Must have presentation skills
  • Be willing to represent the organisation across different media platforms.
  • Must be able to connect and work well across a diverse team in multiple geographic locations.
  • Must have the ability to inspire, encourage and lead teams, delegations and project member on day to day tasks but also during periods of high pressure and in stressful environments. 
  • Must be able to navigate and drive projects between virtual and cross functional teams
  • Must be able and willing to travel between projects and programmes.
  • Fluent in written and spoken French and English.
  • University Degree in Political Science/International Relations/Social Sciences or other relevant field is considered a plus.
