Description

We are seeking a Senior Policy Adviser (Climate Change) work in the National Strategy Team, principally with the Head of Environmental Strategy, in developing Historic England thinking, policy and actions.

This exciting opportunity will support the Government and the heritage sector in consideration of climate change impacts upon the historic environment, and the opportunities for the historic environment to contribute to the UK`s net zero carbon commitment and to society`s resilience to future climate change. This work will be particularly important to support heritage engagement with the lead up to COP26 in Glasgow in autumn 2021.

This is a fixed term contract until the end of March 2021.

What you will be doing:

This is a strategy post which is principally focussed on climate change and formally line managed by the Head of Environmental Strategy. All Strategy team members work flexibly, but especially so in the present circumstances, and you may be called upon to work on other areas of policy and strategy development to respond to changing priorities within the National Strategy Team.

An important part of this post is to help develop accessible, effective advice to encourage the understanding and sustainable management of the historic environment in the context of climate change. The current priorities include: delivery of an updated climate change adaptation report to Defra in Summer 2021 as part of the Adaptation Reporting Power (ARP) reporting cycle; compiling case studies to support Defra climate change resilience and adaptation work; contributing to the production of summary fact sheets on climate change risk; supporting development and delivery of a climate change hazard map for England.

You will be working in close consultation with the Head of Environmental Strategy to:

-Collate case studies to support climate risk and resilience work

-Undertake work to support the production of the second Historic England Climate Adaptation Report

-Support/oversee delivery of the climate hazard map for England

-Support completion of the Historic England Climate Change Strategy

-Support the sector consultation process for the Climate Change Strategy

-Update web pages and prepare social media posts to provide the heritage sector and the public with information, including new publications.

-Undertake data analysis, research and preparation of presentations, information and appropriate media material as required.

-Work flexibly (up to two days/week) to cover wider strategic issues in response to changing national organisational and team priorities.

Who we are looking for:

-A degree or equivalent qualifications.
-Demonstrable ability to build contacts effectively, internally and externally, with sensitivity, in a spirit of co-operation and partnership whilst balancing different demands and expectations.
-Significant experience of information systems and excellent communication and computer skills including word processing and Excel for basic analysis of statistics.
-The ability to listen, absorb and summarise information from a variety of interest-groups.
-Ability to summarise data and policy reports and communicate this clearly, concisely and effectively to internal and external audiences.
-Interest in climate change adaptation and mitigation and basic understanding of the issues for heritage.

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work -life balance. We offer a wide benefits package including a competitive pension scheme, a generous 28 days holiday, corporate discounts, free entry into English Heritage sites across the county and development opportunities to ensure you achieve your goals.

Historic England are delighted to announce career bridging opportunities to start in the next few weeks and the roles will last until 31st March 2021. We welcome applications from candidates whose employment is adversely impacted by the current pandemic. We are recruiting fixed term contract opportunities across multi-disciplines to help us achieve some of our strategic work in our corporate plan.
