SMart Wind requires an Senior Ornithology Advisor to support the Environmental Impact Assessment, Zone Appraisal Planning, stakeholder consultation process and planning applications to the Planning Inspectorate.

The successful applicant will report to the Environment and Consents Manager, to ensure that SMart Wind’s projects are designed and delivered responsibly and with minimum impact for the environment and stakeholders, on time and on budget.  The Senior Ornithology Advisor will also play an important role in the identification and development of future projects within the Hornsea Zone through strategic engagement with key stakeholders to accelerate and maximise value from SMart Wind’s offshore development programme.

The Senior Ornithology Advisor will support the Offshore Environment Manager in the delivery of all consents required to construct the offshore components of the wind farm projects within the Hornsea Zone.

Key Responsibilities and Activities

Key responsibilities will include, but not be restricted to:

General responsibilities:

  • Understand, promote and adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations and policies in undertaking all activities and ensure safe design of offshore wind farms
  • To adhere to the company values of SMart Wind at all times and represent the company in a professional and respectful manner

 Project level responsibilities:

  • Provision of technical and strategic advice in relation to ornithology issues relevant to the assessment of offshore wind farm projects
  • Coordinate the production of all ornithology surveys, EIA and Appropriate Assessment in relation to the submission of planning applications to the Planning Inspectorate
  •  Assist with the management of specialist ornithology consultants and advisors including determination of scopes of work, contractor appointment and interpretation of advice received
  • Liaison with ornithology stakeholders and regulators throughout development phase and beyond, with specific experience with Defra, MMO, JNCC, Natural England, DECC and NGO organisations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the relevant UK and EU legislation in relation to ornithology matters, specifically in depth understanding of the Habitats Directive and Birds Directives
  • Liaison with partners and other Mainstream colleagues (eg in finance, property, engineering, H&S) to ensure projects are designed and developed to be practical, efficient and safe, that EIAs and consent applications are adequately scoped and that all consents received are fit for purpose
  • Understanding, promotion and adherence to all relevant health and safety regulations and policies in undertaking all survey activities
  • Respond to consultations and contribute to external studies/research as appropriate
  • Regular reporting to Environment and Consents Manager and CEO of SMart Wind

Zone level responsibilities:

  • Support the identification of future projects within the Hornsea Zone through the implementation of Zone Appraisal Planning (ZAP) with specific focus on advising on cumulative impact ornithology thresholds that may influence selection of future projects
  • Work with all Ambassadors to drive innovation and deliver a targeted and benchmarked cost reduction strategy across SMart Wind’s portfolio of projects.

Key Skills, competencies and capabilities

The candidate should be equipped with the following key skills and capabilities:

  • Must have a relevant degree and at least 5 years experience working in offshore ornithology
  • Must have excellent negotiation skills with stakeholders and national regulators.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a team, coordinate and enthuse colleagues and consultants
  • Strong initiative and the ability to proactively identify required tasks
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain sight of the ‘big picture’ and overarching objectives at all times
  • Good IT skills, including experience with MS Word, Excel and Project packages
  • An organised approach to working, task prioritisation and time management
  • Fluency in English (written and oral)
