KOPRI conducts a wide variety of Arctic and Antarctic research in corporation with international institutes and has two scientific stations in polar region - King Sejong in Antarctic & Dasan in Arctic. KOPRI also has a new 7000 ton class research ice breaker commissioned in 2009. As a part of intense, institute-wide strategic planning activities to expand KOPRI's role in international polar science community, KOPRI invites applications for senior research scientist positions in order to foster excellence in its research.

 

1. Positions

 

KOPRI invites applications for Senior Research Scientist positions in the following fields. 

1) Plankton Ecology 

     - Ecological and physiological traits of plankton in polar ocean and sea ice 

- Biogeochemical cycles in marine pelagic food web 

- Long-term monitoring on plankton populations in relation to climatic change 

2) Permafrost Meteorology 

- Observation and analysis on the interactions between climate change and permafrost  

 (e.g., greenhouse gas exchange between the thawing permafrost and the atmosphere) 

3) Physical Oceanography(Observational Oceanography) 

     - Water mass characteristics and ocean circulation study in polar regions through field observation and data analysis

- Physical mechanism of polynya formation and sea ice production

- Observation for the ocean-sea ice-atmosphere interactions

4) Chemical Oceanography

- Biological and geochemical processes in polar oceans

- Studies on interactions between polar warming and global climatic change using chemical tracers

- Long-term monitoring on changes in physico-chemical environment of polar oceans

5) Meteoritics(Geochemistry)

- Classification of Antarctic meteorites using geochemical tools

- Studies on the origin of meteorites using noble gas isotope system

- Age determination of meteorites and evolution of early solid materials in Solar system

6) Glaciology (Stable Isotope)

- Glaciological studies at the polar and alpine regions

- Paleo-climate reconstruction using oxygen and hydrogen isotope analysis of gas and

water in ice cores

7) Bioinformatics

- Bioinformatic analysis of polar organisms

- Biological network analysis of polar organisms

8) Enzyme engineering

- Isolation of useful enzymes from polar organisms

- Identification of active site residues in useful enzymes

- Modification of an enzyme's structure and its function

      9) Marine microbiology

- Field-based studies on marine microbial communities

- Monitoring of the impacts on marine microorganisms by climate change

 

 

2. Responsibilities

 

The successful applicants are expected to

1) Develop & maintain innovative research programs that can be applied to a variety of polar research issues.

2) Participate in summer & winter expeditions in polar region.

3) Present results at scientific conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals annually.

 

 

3. Qualification

 

1) Successful applicants must have

- SCI class paper performances as the first author for recent 3 years.
       ?  The applicant also can apply for "KOPRI Leading Scientist", who published a paper as the first author or the
            correspondent author for recent 5 years in more than one of the Journal which is Nature, Science, Cell class or the other 
            Journal of which impact factor is equvalent to NSC when published.

2) Preference may be given to candidates who have

- Experiences in polar research areas.

- Oral and written skills to develop a project proposal in English.(Knowledge of Korean language also is an added advantage)

- Understanding of working practice under Korean culture.

3) 2nd-selection(Research capability evaluation): One day among 11th ~ 17th May 2011

- Presentation about applicant's future research plan and interest in English

7. Additional Information

 

1) Starting salary for all positions is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

2) The employment contract for these positions is renewed every three years, when employee proves his/her research abilities 
during the initial one-year contract period.

3) All documents written in the application form should be submitted by the end of application date, otherwise the experiences or
documents will not be approved, and have a disadvantage on promotion after appointment.
