The Senior Campaigner will work as an integral part of the global Greenpeace oceans campaign to end overfishing and establish a network of fully protected marine reserves. He or she will work with colleagues around the world to plan and implement activities to engage seafood businesses to increase the sustainability of their operations and join us as we work for healthy oceans.

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. In conjunction with the Seafood Markets Project Leader, develop and execute a work plan in line  with both short term and long term goals for the campaign.

  • Coordinate information flow within campaign, between departments and across the global organization
  • Facilitate strategic and tactical decision-making on a day-to-day basis
  • Participate in strategic planning of the campaign
  • Build alliances and/or support relationships with constituencies identified in strategic planning, including with other NGO partners
  • Maintain a working knowledge of political, legislative, regulatory and economic framework relevant to the campaign
  • Coordinate and conduct research and technical analysis
  • Maintain a working knowledge of sustainable seafood and ocean conservation issues and be able to present the information to a variety of audiences in language they can understand
  • Develop or assist in the development of written materials
  • Write or assist in writing press releases and in planning media strategies. 
  • Act as spokesperson for campaign to the media and develop pro-active relationship with media
  • Represent Greenpeace and the campaign at public events, grassroots activists groups, local citizens/town forums and the environmental community at large.
  • Keep director up to date on the campaign and recommend changes in strategies or tactics if necessary

2. Manage a sub-component of a campaign or project independently, with guidance from the project leader, including leading & managing a cross programmatic team, and generally ensuring good communications between the sub project team and other GPUS teams or departments as well as other GPUS offices.

3. Lead engagement, including negotiations, with stakeholders such as government agencies and corporations

 4. Manage campaign budgets as assigned by the Seafood Markets Project Leader

 5. Mentor junior campaigners to teach the fundamental skills of Greenpeace campaigning.

 6. Direct, organize and participate in non-violent direct action events to support the campaign goals and national objectives.

 7. Contribute to building and maintaining a strong, diverse and inclusive campaign team

 8. Perform other job related duties as requested or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Academic degree in a relevant field, advanced degrees preferred
  • At least 7 years experience with corporate or environmental campaigning (or equivalent with advanced education)
  • Track record of successfully designing and implementing effective campaigns
  • Strong project leadership and project planning skills to enable the delivery of projects to time, to budget and to deliver clear objectives
  • Excellent ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in cross-cultural settings
  • Passionate about forest protection and social justice
  • Excellent spoken and written English; fluency in other languages a plus
  • Competency with contemporary technology and computer software
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently,
  • Willingness to work outside of normal business hours to accommodate international time zones and campaign exigencies
  • Commitment to non-violence as a means of affecting change and supportive of non-partisan approaches to advocacy
