IBERDROLA RENEWABLES is seeking Senior Operational Wind Forecasters. (Candidates with less experience may be considered at a lower level.)  The person in the position will work in a high energy environment where accurate forecasts are critical to the success of the business and where contributions are recognized and rewarded.   This position, located in Portland, Oregon, reports to the manager of the Wind Asset Management Meteorology (WAMM) group whose mission is to deliver meteorological products to optimize value for Iberdrola's wind energy business.  The forecaster will work directly with energy traders, schedulers and remote operations personnel to provide them with the most accurate wind energy forecasts at time scales from minutes to five days. Responsibilities include: 

  • Interpret meteorological data and forecasts from internal sources as well as 3rd party wind energy forecast providers and government agencies in order to produce the best possible estimates of expected wind energy. 
  • Provide timely, clear and concise communication of the end product which is critical to end-users working under very strict deadlines
  • Produce forecasts and analyses for wind farm O & M and construction.
  • Perform weather analysis and programming tasks to support the forecasting infrastructure and enhance/improve forecast products and accuracy. 
  • Maintain and enhance the technical infrastructure used for interpretation and analysis of meteorological and/or operate NWP models to produce prognostic products customized to wind energy forecasting tasks
  • Adhere to effective internal controls.

 

Qualifications
 
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five years of operational forecasting experience. (Candidates with less experience may be considered at a lower level.)
  • Ability to write data analysis programs and scripts AND skills in two or more of the following programming languages: Fortran, PERL, RUBY, VisualBasic, Matlab scripting, Unis shell scripting.
  • Experience in at least one of following: maintaining and enhancing the Gempak and NPROGS suite; experience configuring and running MM5 or WRF models and processing output; leading forecasting team.
  • Proficiency in the basic use of the MS-Office suite and in working in both Unix and MS-Windows environments.  
  • Ability to work under pressure, time constraints and to establish priorities.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to constantly shifting priorities.
  • Strong skills in independent problem solving.
  • Ability to work in a shift rotation, which may include nights, weekends and holidays. 

Preference may be given to candidates with the following: 

  • Master's degree  or PH.D. with focus on weather forecasting or related field.
  • Operational forecasting in the energy sector or in a wind forecasting application.
  • Exposure to OSI's PI Historian.
