Natural Power’s Ecology and Hydrology department currently seek a highly motivated Marine / Senior Marine Ornithologist to join our team based inFalkirk (exact level offered will be dependent on experience).  Reporting to the Principal Ecologist, you will be responsible for providing Offshore ecology services to clients within the wind and wave/tidal industry, with a distinct focus on work concerning birds.  In this role, you will primarily be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

Duties

  • Provide advice on ecological issues in relation to offshore renewable projects, particularly with respect to consenting and construction phases.
  • Prepare and provide written technical reports.
  • Prepare and provide scoping reports and EIA chapters.
  • Compile Information for Habitat Regulations Assessment.
  • Provide Input into survey recommendations, design and data analysis.
  • Liaise with survey team, providing input into organization where required.
  • Liaise with clients, landowners and statutory consultees throughout projects.
  • Tendering for new work where required.
  • Manage project budgets.
    • Manage the expectations of existing clients for current projects.
    • Develop a relationship with each client in order to anticipate their needs.
    • Plan and organise a number of concurrent projects, drawing on resources to achieve milestones.
    • Ensure projects meet expected budget and timescales, renegotiating where required.

  • Attend regular team meetings and host any required by direct reports.
  • Provide regular progress reports for projects and team management as required.
  • Deliver and present technical reports to internal and external audiences.
  • Build and maintain positive effective working relationships.

Knowledge & Experience


You will have a degree or equivalent in a biological, environmental or ecological discipline, and/or able to demonstrate a sound knowledge in bird ecology.

Ideally you will have specialist knowledge and experience in:

  • Understanding of the renewable industry and client requirements
  • Compiling of EIA chapters, preferably for offshore renewable EIAs
  • Writing technical reports, preferably for offshore renewable projects
  • Understanding of the issues surrounding marine ecology for offshore construction projects, and mitigation measures
  • Working in ecological / environmental consultancy
  • Habitats Regulations Assessments
  • Liaison with clients and stakeholders
  • Building networks
  • Organising surveys
  • UKand European legislation in relation to protected habitats and species
  • Planning system in relation to renewable energy
  • Project Management skills
  • Offshore ecology surveys (such as boat-based and aerial surveys)

Knowledge of any of the following areas would be beneficial:

  • Benthic habitats
  • Fish
  • Tidal processes
  • Onshore ornithology
  • Onshore ecology
  • Analysis of ecological data

The office

This role will be based at our office in Falkirk.
