Across the modern energy landscape, engineering is playing a more important role than ever before. But this is engineering with a different kind of emphasis. Technical delivery, combined with opportunities to shape Government policy, influence market direction and inform decision-making across UK energy networks. Infrastructure development, combined with the power to impact on supply, sustainability and value for money for energy consumers.

Engineering at Ofgem means being able to understand technical strategy at a macro level. We regulate £multi-billion infrastructure projects, in an energy market that is going through a period of dramatic change. So we’re looking for Engineers with more than just technical knowledge. As a Senior Manager in the part of Ofgem responsible for monitoring the delivery of costs and outputs for Great Britain’s gas transmission and distribution networks, you’ll need to be able to communicate and influence at the highest level, as you work to create lasting, significant change.

The regulated Network companies currently spend £2.5 billion per year running and upgrading energy assets in Great Britain, and you’ll head-up a small, multi-disciplinary team responsible for ensuring that present and future consumers continue to receive value for money for network services. Your extensive knowledge of the technical and commercial operation of gas transmission and distribution networks will allow you to assess how companies are performing and develop analytic models to track changes in the characteristics of physical pipeline networks. With a pragmatic approach to performance management, you will develop robust action plans that drive improvement and deliver timely and cost-effective outcomes.

Yet this role isn’t just about revenue and regulation; it’s about planning for the future and improving the national power supply. You won’t be a remote, hands-off leader. Rather, you will be highly visible as you actively participate in internal and external working groups, harnessing your exceptional interpersonal skills to forge effective relationships with stakeholders at every level. In return you can expect career progression and a high degree of autonomy, in a flexible working environment quite unlike those offered by the rest of the industry.

Ofgem can offer you a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes:

  • Up to 30 days’ annual leave
  • Excellent training and development opportunities
  • The opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, which include a valuable range of benefits
  • Flexible working hours and family friendly policies
  • Subsidised gym and restaurant
  • Interest free season ticket loan
