Building upon a strong foundation of science, partnership and field demonstration, Conservation International (CI) empowers societies to responsibly and sustainably care for nature for the well-being of people. Founded in 1987, CI is headquartered in the Washington, D.C. area and employs more than 800 staff in 30 countries on six continents, and has nearly 1,000 partners around the world.  CI Europe leads CI’s engagement with European partners. Its role is to engage European Union institutions, European governments and other key stakeholders on policy, partnerships and funding opportunities relevant to CI’s global mission.

Already successful in Germany, Norway, France and European Union, CI Europe is now seeking to develop relationships and engagement with other relevant European countries. For the position of Senior Manager - European Public Partnerships, CI Europe is looking for candidates with a proven track record of raising public funding with one or more of the following countries: The Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Finland and the United Kingdom. The position will be responsible to develop relationships and engagement with those countries as well as maintaining and further developing existing relationships with the European Commission and the Government of France. S/he will raise CI’s profile with key agencies through dialogue in relevant countries and will monitor the execution of projects to ensure commitments are met.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Successfully develop and manage Conservation International’s relationship with the European Commission, the government of France and other relevant country/ies through the maintenance of regular communication with partners and by developing communication tools
  • Raise significant amounts of new public funds to support field programs. This includes:
    • identifying fundraising opportunities to bring to CI’s field programs and technical teams
    • leading and/or supporting the development of proposals
    • participating in account management at the project level
    • amplifying CI's existing work through new and existing opportunities for public funds.
  • Reinforce CI’s position as a trusted advisor to the European Commission and targeted European Governments and related partners by organizing high-level meetings and exchanges for senior CI staff visiting Europe and European partners visiting field programs or CI headquarters
  • Support CI’s goals by promoting CI’s policy objectives in Europe, sharing strategic contacts and contributing to coherent approach in Europe
  • Raise awareness about the role of the European Governments and other relevant partners within CI and create awareness of the importance of engaging in these partnerships

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This position is located in Brussels, Belgium
  • Normal office environment
  • Frequent domestic and international travel

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Proven track record ability to fundraise and network, developing and managing partnerships across a range of stakeholders
  • Graduate degree in environmental studies, public policy, international relations/development studies or natural resource management and minimum 5-8 years of relevant experience
  • Excellent knowledge of the institutional framework of the targeted European Governments and the European Commission
  • Extensive contacts in the corresponding environment and development communities
  • Excellent understanding of conservation, development and political issues in Europe and globally
  • Strong writing and oral skills
  • Strong proven interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment that requires collaboration and networking with others in dispersed locations
  • Willingness to travel frequently to targeted European countries, the USA and other locations
  • Excellent command of English and French is indispensable
  • Candidates should be EU nationals or have a valid work permit for Belgium

Preferred

  • Knowledge of one or more additional European languages
