The Environmental Portfolio at The Pew Charitable Trusts
For more than 25 years, Pew has been a major force in engaging the public and policy makers about the causes, consequences, and solutions to some of the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Our environment work spans all seven continents with more than 250 professionals working at the local, national, and international levels to reduce the scope and severity of global environmental problems, such as the erosion of large natural ecosystems that contain a great part of the world's remaining biodiversity, and the destruction of the marine environment.
Pew has worked in the United States and Canada since 1990 to protect vast stretches of wilderness and more recently expanded our land conservation efforts to Australia's Outback and Chilean Patagonia. Safeguarding these places offers an opportunity to conserve wildlife habitat, shorelines and landscapes for current and future generations. Our work relies on the sciences of conservation, biology, and economics to advocate for practical and durable solutions to the loss of biodiversity.
In the sea, reforms to how our oceans are managed are essential to address overfishing, pollution, and loss of habitat. Pew began its oceans program in the United States, focusing on ending overfishing and protecting fragile marine habitat. Starting in 2005, Pew's ocean conservation program expanded around the world and played a significant role in reforming marine fisheries management in the European Union and on the high seas and creating marine reserves around the world. Our work is grounded in the best available science and pursues domestic and international conservation measures that are long-term and provide permanent, durable protections for marine ecosystems.
International Conservation Unit
The international conservation unit (ICU) works across Pew's environment portfolio to ensure development of robust policy positions and strategy, provide specialized expertise, assist in developing and launching of new bodies of work, and provide for internal and external coordination, including coordinating Pew efforts around major international meetings.
The ICU is an integral part of the broader environment team, which currently focuses on establishing and improving marine protected areas; protecting ocean life on the high seas and in the deep sea; improving fisheries management, ending illegal fishing, and reducing harmful fisheries subsidies; preventing ocean plastics; protecting coastal habitats; and protecting Chilean Patagonia and Australia's Outback and oceans.
Position Overview
The senior officer, international conservation unit is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with key partners and stakeholders, including senior officials in governments and international organizations, conservation thought leaders and advocates, funders, and non-governmental organizations. The senior officer works with project teams to develop and implement strategies to achieve campaign goals, including direct engagement with key partners and the media. The senior officer also provides strategic advice and environmental expertise to the portfolio as a whole, proactively identifying and capitalizing on political opportunities and addressing threats that impact multiple campaigns and Pew's reputation as a trusted, science-based conservation leader.
This position is based in Pew's Washington, D.C. office and reports to the project director, international conservation unit.



Responsibilities

  • With the international conservation unit and relevant project directors, develop and execute strategies for achieving project and portfolio goals, including through outreach to country stakeholders, conservation partners, and with United Nations and other intergovernmental organizations.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with high-level government officials and representatives from national and international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the broader conservation community to advance project and portfolio objectives.
  • Provide environmental expertise and strategic advice to campaigns.
  • Identify when goals are at risk of not being met and take appropriate steps to address obstacles to success in ways that keep the project on course.
  • Participate in Pew delegations to intergovernmental meetings, as necessary.
  • Represent Pew publicly at conferences, seminars and official forums; serve as a trusted expert and thought leader on environmental policy matters.
  • Contribute to and participate in tasks of the environment portfolio as assigned, as well as broader Pew-related projects and activities as needed.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 10 years of experience in the international conservation arena, with a particular focus on outreach to or advocacy with governments and intergovernmental organizations. Prior experience in marine conservation or policy preferred.
  • Possesses a strong network of relevant contacts in the conservation community that can provide expert information and advance results. Able to leverage relationships to influence positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking.
  • Able to be flexible, creative, and assume high accountability for all areas of responsibility. A strong commitment to producing measurable results.
  • Able to set short- and long-term planning goals in line with program strategy. A task-oriented style, with focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization. Able to develop and move projects forward with a high degree of independence and autonomy.
  • Politically astute; able to understand the needs and motivations of different individuals and international institutions and conceptualize win-win scenarios that satisfy multiple agendas among multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong diplomatic skills. Able to work productively with a wide array of different people and institutions that frequently disagree with and are in competition with one another.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including an ease in briefly summarizing the essence of issues and means to address them. Strong oral, presentation, facilitation and written communication skills such that complex ideas, thoughts and concepts are clearly articulated for a general audience. Clear, effective writing style. Proficiency in English required; additional language skills preferred.
  • Able to synthesize large amounts of information and focus quickly on the essence of an issue, determine whether it is ripe for intervention, and identify means to address it. A strong commitment to producing measurable results.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to develop and manage productive relationships with consultants, partners and others who contribute to the development of a project. Excellent listening skills. Highly articulate.
  • Media-savvy. Able to use effective marketing techniques and media exposure to communicate the impact of research on conservation needs.
  • Seasoned judgment, able to justify recommendations, and be responsive, clear and firm with colleagues and partners.
  • Able to adapt to a complex working environment in which influence is often exerted indirectly rather than through traditional chain of command hierarchies. Successful experience in leveraging ideas and creating projects that produce measurable results.
