Join one of Australia's most successful national climate advocacy teams. Solutions for Climate Australia, as part of Climate Action Network Australia, builds power to obtain better climate policies and outcomes from Australian federal political parties of all persuasions.

We are seeking a senior international campaigner to build international advocacy for greater climate ambition in Australia. This position will campaign for stronger climate delivery from federal political parties of all persuasions- by engaging with contacts in the international climate space to create powerful advocacy and pressure for change in Australian political and public spaces.

Our work is led by senior campaigners with long and successful track-records of winning major campaigns. This position will work closely with other senior campaigners building power and influence within parliament, across the Australian business sectors and internationally.

ABOUT US

Solutions for Climate Australia is the federal political advocacy project of Climate Action Network Australia (CANA). Solutions aims to bring about federal bipartisanship on higher climate ambition this decade, and seeks to better coordinate the climate movement and fill the gaps on climate advocacy in Australia. Solutions for Climate has achieved major outcomes in its initial work, and has significant funding for the coming term of the federal government.

Climate Action Network Australia (CANA) supports the Australian climate movement to achieve real action to protect people at home and abroad from climate change, to safeguard our natural environment, and to build a fair, clean, healthy Australia for everyone. We support and help drive strategic thinking and campaign for collaboration between members and allies both nationally and internationally.

ROLE:

This position will work closely with the Solutions for Climate Australia team, other CANA staff, and with leaders from CANA member organisations. The International Senior Climate Campaigner will use their established knowledge of international climate policies, forums and relationships with international climate actors to exert powerful influence on the Australian federal decision makers of all parties to commit to stronger climate policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain and grow relationships with contacts in the international political climate space, for example foreign politicians, bureaucrats, industry leaders, scientists and leaders from NGO climate organisations, and create and drive powerful opportunities for those contacts to influence Australian federal politics.
  2. Identify and manage campaign opportunities, for example research, analysis and media, that highlight international ambition and the need for the Australian Government and all Australian political parties to increase ambition on climate.
  3. Work with CAN International, CAN National and Regional Nodes on international climate policy and UNFCCC processes to ensure fulsome engagement with Australia
  4. Maintain a strong understanding of key foreign government and UN climate policies.
  5. Work closely with other Solutions staff and allies to leverage relationships and implement tactics in parliament.

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL:

  • Previous experience working in international climate policy, advocacy and politics.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Australian federal policy making as well a strong understanding of the Australian federal political landscape.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish trusted relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including private, government and civil society representatives.
  • Excellent time management, professional initiative, prioritisation, and networking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at once in a self-directed manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and high-level networking skills, and experience in building value-add relationships with a diverse range of people.
  • A track record navigating successful outcomes in complex internal and external stakeholder environments.

DESIRABLE:

  • Demonstrated experience developing campaign strategies and tactics to win significant outcomes.
  • An understanding and previous experience with or within NGOs working on climate change advocacy.
  • Existing contacts with federal MPs and advisers.
  • Previous experience working in a diverse NGO movement where outcomes and alliances are often obtained using personal or informal power.
  • Media experience, including both setting up coverage and doing interviews.

OFFICE ARRANGEMENTS

CANA is a flexible workplace with work from home and office options and flexible working hours. CANA has a BYO devices (laptop, phone) policy.

Contract period: Until December 2024, with continuation possible.
