DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the overall managerial and administrative leadership of the Sub-regional Coordinator for Central Asia, and the direct technical supervision of the Director, Forestry Policy and Information Division, as a member of the Multi-disciplinary Team, will provide support on matters related to forestry, including forest and wildlife management, forest and wildlife conservation, forest products and services, forestry knowledge and information, and forestry policies and institutions which will lead FAO’s response to the needs of the Sub-region, including those of the Regional Economic Integration Organizations (REIOs). Specifically to: - plan and implement an effective FAO forestry programme in Central Asia; advise governments of the sub-region in identifying and formulating national or sub-regional programmes and projects; analyse problems and appraise developments in the countries of the sub-region in the broad field of forestry;
- promote the development of national capacities to effectively manage and conserve forest resources and trees outside forests; and to develop institutions that promote the role of forests to reduce poverty and to support sustainable livelihoods and income from forest products and services;
- advise governments in the formulation, development and promotion and implementation of national forest programmes, including linkages with other sectors and with action programmes to protect the environment, to conserve biological diversity, to combat desertification, to mitigate the effects of climate change, and other relevant plans and programmes;
- contribute to region-wide periodic planning and programming exercises; lead and coordinate the organization and preparation of technical documentation for official meetings involving countries in the sub-region, including Regional Conferences, Regional Forestry Commissions, and expert consultations.
- as a contribution to the substantive global forestry programme, develop methodologies and guidelines for use by government and non-government practitioners to improve the broad participation of all levels of society in all aspects of forestry, ranging from the field level up to the national policy level;
- participate in the development and implementation of effective forest policies and programmes to support sustainable livelihoods and the reduction of poverty, both in Central Asia and in other parts of the world;
- develop background papers and material for publications, including studies and surveys related to participatory forestry.
- cooperate with team members in integrated agricultural and rural development sector and policy analysis reviews and ensure appropriate attention to forestry issues and contributions in these areas;
- provide technical backstopping for designated national, sub-regional and regional projects;
- perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidates should meet the following: |
- Advanced university degree in forestry, natural resources management, social or physical sciences or a related field
- Ten years of relevant experience in forestry or related areas of sustainable development
- Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other official languages of the Organization. Knowledge of Russian will be an asset

SELECTION CRITERIA Candidates will be assessed against the following: |
- Extent and relevance of experience in forestry concepts, policies and issues with an emphasis on participatory forestry and institutions;
- Extent of knowledge of development and conservation issues in Central Asia;
- Ability to develop and implement plans and programmes, analyze problems and develop recommendations;
- Capacity to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams;
- Excellent communications skills, both orally and in writing; knowledge of Russian is an asset

REMUNERATION |
Level P-5 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for post adjustment) from US$ 116,241 US$ 136,972 (without dependants) and from US$ 125,125 to US$ 148,648 (with dependants) |
