The international consulting department of Österreichische Bundesforste (the Austrian Federal Forest Joint Stock Company) is offering a position for a Senior Forest and Climate Change Consultant based in Purkersdorf near Vienna, Austria. 

Main tasks

  • Project management, backstopping of projects, quality control and assurance, handling of contracts and financial controlling
  • Networking with partners, clients, associated experts and relevant stakeholders
  • Project acquisition; preparation of project proposals and technical offers, selection of partners and personnel for interdisciplinary teams
  • Business development; conceptual inputs in the further development of forest and climate change services, including climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Project implementation; international short-term (1-4 weeks) and medium-term missions (2-3 months) worldwide
  • Preparation of feasibility / policy studies and technical reports
  • Providing high-quality strategic advice, technical assistance and capacity building / training to our clients
  • Conducting financial, economic, institutional and environmental analyses of projects

 Your Profile

  • Advanced university degree in forestry or related discipline
  • At least 5 years of post-graduate working experience, out of which 2-3 years in an international environment
  • Project experience in developing countries
  • Previous experience in the consultancy business is a strong asset
  • Familiarity with the policies and instruments of multilateral (such as EC, WB, GEF, IFC, regional development banks) and bilateral donors (such as KFW, GIZ, ADA) active in forest sector development cooperation is a strong asset
  • Practical experience in the design, monitoring and implementation of forest carbon projects for the compliance and voluntary markets
  • Technical skills in the design and implementation of Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems, terrestrial forest inventories and the application of Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS technologies 
  • Familiarity with the international policy negotiations related to REDD+ (UNFCCC) and best practices on LULUCF (IPCC-GPG), relevant methodologies and voluntary carbon standards
  • Professional understanding of underlying causes of deforestation and forest degradation
  • Professional understanding of sustainable forestry management practises
  • Good grasp of pertinent sector issues such as good governance, FLEGT, land and tree tenure, institutional reforms and devolution, pro-poor approaches, social and environmental safeguards, socio-economics etc.
  • Professional understanding of forest certification and/or auditing of forest carbon projects is a strong asset
  • Broad professional understanding of biodiversity conservation, protected area management, sustainable forest management, participatory forest management, biomass energy
  • Team player with independent working style and good interpersonal skills
  • Good communication, presentation as well as analytic and report writing skills
  • Flexibility, ability to work independently and to deliver under time pressure Excellent command of English and another language; preferably French or Spanish
  • Intermediate level of German is a prerequisite
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work abroad
