Based within the Natural Environment Research Council, the UKRI Senior Environmental Sustainability Programme Manager will play a key role within the UKRI Sustainability Team in the implementation of UKRI’s new Environmental Sustainability Strategy. You will develop and lead environmental performance improvement projects to establish a sound foundation and framework for the delivery of the organisation’s strategic objectives in areas including carbon emissions reduction, sustainable procurement, resource efficiency and biodiversity.

You will work with UKRI colleagues and external stakeholders to identify and establish innovative approaches to sustain UKRI’s world-class science and innovation whilst reducing carbon emissions. You will champion evidence-based decision making through managing the development of our performance reporting systems and help to maintain compliance with relevant environmental legal, statutory reporting and other requirements.

You will be responsible for managing external contractors providing technical advisory, auditing, assurance or data management systems. You will also be responsible for identifying, mitigating and managing risks and opportunities associated with carbon emissions reduction and other environmental sustainability activities.

You will need:

  • Degree level qualification or comparable experience in an environmental science or sustainability field. 
  • Leadership experience in a sustainability role.
  • Excellent programme and project management and organisational skills - able to manage multiple high-level projects and conflicting priorities.
  • Demonstrable experience in building networks to ensure high quality data reporting and to identify and share best practice.
