Description

The Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC), a multilateral financial institution and member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group, has an opening for an experienced Senior Environmental Specialist. The IIC’s mission is to promote economic development in its regional developing member countries by fostering the establishment, growth, and modernization of private enterprises, with a focus on small and medium-sized companies.

The IIC is committed to sustainable development and good governance as reflected in its Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy. This is achieved through promoting good practice standards and supporting clients in efforts to manage risk, improve the development outcomes of projects financed, and add value to their businesses.

The IIC is seeking to strengthen its team of environmental/social specialists by recruiting a Senior Environmental Specialist to support the Corporation’s operations in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Review and appraise new investment proposals for the IIC’s consideration, including the identification of potential environmental and social impacts, risks, and issues;
  • Formulate recommendations and requirements for client action and draft the documentation necessary to facilitate financing (e.g., public disclosure documents and relevant sections of reports to be submitted to the Board of Directors);
  • Advise and work with clients to define the steps and action plans necessary to meet the requirements of the IIC’s Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy;
  • Monitor the environmental and social performance of specific projects assigned;
  • Identify opportunities for adding value to an investment and guide IIC investment staff in identifying environmental and social opportunities above and beyond risk management that could potentially enhance a project; and
  • Work with clients and the IIC’s Technical Assistance and Strategic Partnerships Division to mobilize technical and financial support for clients to address the environmental and social aspects of their operations.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Education: Master’s degree in environmental sciences, natural resource management, environmental engineering, or other relevant field.
  • Experience: Minimum of eight years of relevant experience in environmental and social risk management and demonstrated track record of working on these issues with private firms. Demonstrated experience with the effective application of good practices standards typically used by multilateral development banks, particularly the International Finance Corporation’s Performance Standards, and the IDB Environmental and Safeguards Compliance Policy.
  • Languages: Excellent command of Spanish and English (Portuguese and/or French desirable).
  • Candidates must be citizens of an IIC member country.
  • Availability to travel frequently to Latin American and Caribbean countries.
