In this role you will be working within Environmental Operations which provides support to the business on environmental issues through a series of locally based multi-disciplinary teams. You will provide specialist knowledge relating to environmental issues (water quality, pollution control, waste management, contamination, environmental appraisal) especially to the South waterway teams (London / South East / Kennet & Avon) and others working in that geographical area. Taking proactive steps to keep the business informed of its obligations in this field including advice on legislative compliance and ensure works promote group objectives by the correct application of group environment policy, heritage policy and defined standards. Contribute to the delivery of environmental objectives and promote in line with group's strategic approach. Challenging aspects will involve being proactive in identifying issues and solutions within area of responsibility; mentoring colleagues on complex or novel situations; liaison with regulators at a senior level; and enforcing group standards and procedures
Essential qualifications and knowledge required:
• Environmental science (or similar) degree (or equivalent level)
• Full Membership of IEMA or other appropriate professional body (CIWEM / CIWM), working towards Chartered Environmentalist status
• Comprehensive working knowledge of environmental legislation specialising in a particular area such as water, waste and contaminated land/environmental chemistry, but also having a wider knowledge of the other areas including ecology, EIA and health and safety.
• Practical experience in water quality, pollution control, waste management, contaminated land / environmental chemistry role(s),
• Proven skills in resolving novel and complex situations and in management of environmental risks including liaison with senior management and regulators.
• Proven skills in training / coaching colleagues
• Project / Consultant management (i.e. specification, commissioning and managing; satisfactory delivery).
Preferred:
• Chartered status
Skills and experience required:
• Specialist in water quality / pollution control
• Experience relevant to construction / maintenance activities and operational sites.
