The post holder project manages the assessment of environmental risks and opportunities of Natural Resources Wales projects and strategies.

Job Location

Buckley or Cardiff. Work will be across the whole of Wales and so travel & overnight stays will be required. Whilst travel on public transport is preferred, some car driving is essential for site visits and a UK licence is required

Job purpose

The post holder project manages the assessment of environmental risks and opportunities of Natural Resources Wales projects and strategies. They will also provide advice on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes and wider sustainability issues to ensure projects and programmes meet wider Natural Resource Wales policies, objectives and legal compliance. In addition the post holder may provide expertise in a related specific environmental discipline.

The post holder ensures that all work carried out by or for the Environmental Assessment Unit (EAU) meets national standards which are recognised within the environmental sector.

Environmental assessment ensures appropriate environmental impact and reduced detriment to the environment in respect of any NRW programme of works or strategies relating to our operational activities.

Job Specific Responsibilities

Delivering results

Provide guidance to operational teams in order to influence compliance with NRW corporate plan / legislation / best practice ways of working. Support the EAU by leading on screening of programmes for environmental risk and lead the environmental risk management on your portfolio of projects, providing functional / specialist input to deliver better projects including multiple environmental outcomes.

Building strong stakeholder relationships

Build and sustain effective relationships with operational customers to understand issues and provide effective response / steer for operational needs. Good communication and facilitation skills will be required to engage internal and external consultees with project and strategy development.

Ensuring effective governance

Keep up to date on changing legislation / best practice externally, to inform internal priorities and appropriate alignment

Job Specific Requirements

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in environmental science or a related subject.
  • Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, or equivalent professional institute, or be willing to pursue this professional qualification
  • Project Management experience and qualification (eg. PRINCE2) is desirable.
  • Experience in Environmental assessment at an operational and strategic level and knowledge of, and experience in the application of, environmental legislation (eg EIA, SEA, Habitats Regulations Assessment, Water Framework Directive) would be an advantage.
  • Strong communication, influencing and negotiating skills are essential. You will be required to problem solve and implement innovative work practices.

Due consideration has been given to the Welsh language requirements for the post and the existing skills within the team. Taking this into consideration the Welsh language skills required for the post are at:

Level 1 - The ability to use basic Welsh conversational phrases (eg “bore da” – “good morning”) and to pronounce Welsh place names correctly

£31,754

Status

This is a permanent, pensionable full-time appointment of 37 hours a week.
