I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG), www.imsg.com, a Federal Government Contractor is submitting a proposal to work with the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) located in Muskegon, MI. We are currently looking for a candidate to fill the Sr. Environmental Field Support Technician position that may become available after contract award.   

The NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) is one of 7 Federal research laboratories within the Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) line office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). GLERL was formed in 1974 to provide a focus for NOAA's environmental and ecosystem research in the Great Lakes and coastal marine environments.

GLERL maintains the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program that integrates a core set of long-term observations on biological, chemical, and physical variables with process-based studies that will serve as the foundation for developing new concepts and modeling tools to explore impacts of various stressors (e.g., invasive species, climate change, nutrient loading, overfishing) on the ecosystem. Long-term observations of ecosystems, in combination with process studies, are necessary for understanding impacts of stressors on ecosystem structure and function, for the development of models and forecasting capabilities, and to inform management decisions. This position will help support GLERL’s research efforts at their Lake Michigan Field Station (LMFS).

Duties:

  • Provide support for upkeep and use of laboratory and field equipment (water quality, invertebrates, fish) at LMFS
  • Provide sample and data management
  • Ensure compliance with lab safety and quality controls
  • Provide support for sample and data analysis
  • Participate in field work preparations and activities on Lake Michigan to collect samples on water quality, invertebrates, and fish,
  • Work is conducted on board research vessels, 25’ to 80’ in length, operating throughout the Great Lakes
  • Duties could include extended periods underway and exposure to adverse weather conditions

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in sciences, biology, chemistry, computers, physics, or other related field.
  • Experience using various laboratory and field instruments desirable, e.g. fluorometer, CTD, calorimeter. Experience analyzing aquatic samples desirable, e.g. chlorophyll, invertebrates, fish.
  • Quantitative scientific experience needed, e.g. math, statistics, physics, computers, chemistry.
  • Extensive computer skills needed, e.g. database programs, statistics packages, time series analysis, graphing/plotting
  • Field experience with field collections, e.g. water quality, zooplankton, and fish collection techniques.
  • Must be able to work a varied daily and weekly schedule and be comfortable in working in adverse weather conditions.
