Description

At National Highways, we’re looking for an Senior Environment Specialist to join our team based in the West Midlands. As part of this role you’ll contribute to the development and delivery of projects within the Midlands region, provide technical expertise on relevant environmental topics and coordinate the activities and resources involved in the identification and evaluation of environmental needs. You will develop these needs into environmental schemes.

You will be required to drive as part of your role and will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position.

What you’ll be leading on

  • Ensure environmental compliance in accordance with industry best practise, legislation, regulations and standards such as DMRB
  • Undertake environmental assessment of proposed projects at initial design stage and support the project as it moves through 3D design process
  • Advice and input into the development of early solutions for proposed projects considering new techniques, materials, feasibility, and costs
  • Identify and commission environmental studies and survey works
  • Collaborate with engineering colleagues to ensure forward programme plans reflect asset needs and priorities, environmental legislation, business priorities and strategies
  • Undertake the identification and evaluation of environmental data and needs to develop future projects, including the compiling of relevant documents, evidence, and options for value management.
  • Undertake inspections / audits of the environment assets in scope, in line with the defined inspections regime and statutory requirements
  • Ensure that environmental inventory and condition information is captured and maintained in the relevant database(s), in line with agreed standards and timescales
  • Provide information relating to programme and budget impacts
  • Recommends improvements in the development of environment management processes and approaches

To be Successful

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in relevant discipline or equivalent experience
  • Membership of professional body (IEMA or similar)
  • Experience in working within budgets including the creation of a budget for scheme development
  • Knowledge of DMRB standards and their application on the highways network
  • Experience in highway construction and delivery methods
  • Experience of undertaking environmental impact assessments
  • Awareness of legislation and guidance on environmental topics – noise, air, waste and permitting
  • Familiarity with GIS packages
  • Practical approach to the application of established methodologies
  • Evidence of excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
