Senior Electrical Engineer - Offshore

Reference: AMS/21/50 (Technical)

Location: Americas - Americas - USA, Peterborough, NH

Travel Requirement: Occasional travel up to 25% of time for periods of a week or more at a time.

Role Purpose

GL Garrad Hassan is the world's largest independent technical and engineering consultancy for renewable energy. We are the recognised global authority on onshore and offshore wind power and also serve the wave, tidal and solar sectors.

An opportunity exists in our Electrical Group for a Senior Electrical Engineer - Offshore, based in our Peterborough, NH North America office. The successful applicant will expand GL Garrad Hassan's resource and capabilities with regard to the design and specification of offshore wind electrical systems.

The role will involve working with clients to undertake offshore wind power electrical design work, produce specifications, provide due diligence, and support other electrical engineering work as required including onshore wind and solar.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Expand GL Garrad Hassan's capabilities in offshore wind power electrical engineering;
  • Provide wind farm electrical engineering services including electrical design and specification, and detailed design review;
  • Produce plans and specifications for collection system, substation, and transmission line;
  • Design and specify onshore and offshore substation equipment including transformers, switchgear, protection, filters, and reactive compensation;
  • Design and specify cabling and grounding systems, foundation interface and landfall systems;
  • Perform design analysis and studies including power flow, harmonics, flicker, short circuit, voltage drop, grounding, and ampacity;
  • Analyze the impact of single or multiple farms on distribution and transmission level networks;
  • Conduct periodic site inspections of electrical works and witness factory acceptance tests;
  • Produce tender proposals (including technical and financial aspects);
  • Liaise with industry suppliers, managing bidding processes and providing critical bid assessment;
  • Liaise with a wide range of clients from wind farm developers to financial institutions;
  • Produce and deliver presentations to clients, and as part of commercial training courses;
  • Supervise and mentor staff;
  • Participate in R&D projects from time to time;
  • Apply knowledge of the North American electric power system, including regulatory and reliability framework, market structures and power purchase  arrangements; Independent System Operator and Regional Transmission Organizations, and constraints to wind power development; and
  • Represent GL GH in relevant industry groups and participate in working groups to establish and maintain regional expertise.

Person Specification

To be successful in this role, and our business, you will need to demonstrate the following qualification, professional expertise and personal attributes:

Technical / Professional Expertise

On appointment:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with emphasis in power systems from an ABET accredited 4 year university or equivalent;
  • Significant commercial experience undertaking the kind of work identified in section 2;
  • Experienced in the use of electrical analysis packages, such as ETAP and PSS/E; and
  • Experience with working to codes and standards.

Desirable:

  • MSEE or other advanced degree;
  • Professional Engineering License;
  • Commercial experience working within the renewable energy consultancy industry;
  • Previous experience supervising/mentoring staff;
  • Climb wind turbines (approximately 80 meters up a vertical ladder) utilizing appropriate safety gear; and
  • Previous experience of business development in a technical consultancy.

Competency Requirements

  • Fluent in Microsoft Office products;
  • Writing and communication skills must be excellent; good organization and time management skills; and
  • Proficient in business development situations.
