Advanced level EHS Point of Contact position for research and development centers and support organizations. Interacts with researchers, support staff, senior managers, and DOE on a regular basis.
- Provide support as an EHS Point of Contact (POC) for assigned R&D and support organizations. Support will include:
o Conducting advanced risk assessments
o Responding to staff inquiries and requests for assistance on EHS matters
o Completing code compliance reviews
o Reviewing plans for future research projects
o Presenting EHS information at meetings
o Assisting in resolution of EHS concerns and problems
o Reviewing safe operating procedures
o Developing and implementing work place exposure monitoring plans
o Performing readiness reviews
o Interacting with researchers, line management and senior management

- Serve as a POC for building-related EHS issues which may include EHS support for construction and maintenance activities, fire and life safety assessments, and indoor air quality assessments.

- Provide guidance to NREL staff on implementation of various EHS programs.

- Apply advanced EHS technical skills to tasks within areas of expertise such as industrial hygiene, occupational safety, emergency response and others singly or in combination.

- Implement and administer assigned NREL EHS programs and Office Desk Procedures.

- Perform special project technical work, individually and as a team member or team leader.

- Develop plans for and conduct EHS inspections, audits and oversight assessments.

- Support and participate in Safety & Security Council/Safety Panel activities.

- Provide New Employee EHS orientation. Develop and provide other EHS training to various organizational units. The training may be formal scheduled classes or informal, on-demand training on special topics.

- Act as backup for EHS programs assigned to other EHS Office members. These programs will be assigned based on the needs of the EHS Office and the expertise of the individual.

- Conduct accident/incident investigation and causal analysis as needed. Follow-up on corrective action implementation.

- Act as a member of the NREL Emergency Response Team for spill response. Responsibilities include: participation in drills, classroom training, wearing SCBA and maintenance of required certifications.
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.

Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques and standards. Considered internal subject matter expert.

Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.
-Demonstrated leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project responsibilities.
-Demonstrated ability to independently perform duties.
-Advanced technical knowledge of EHS practices, procedures and techniques.
-Excellent interpersonal and oral communications skills. 
-Excellent technical writing skills.
-Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). 
-Master’s degree in environmental health, occupational safety, industrial hygiene or other relevant discipline. 
-40 hours HAZWOPER training. 
-Ability to lead and participate on both intra-office and cross-organizational teams. 
-Ability to travel on occasion.
-Ability and willingness to work weekends and/or evenings on occassion as need arises. 
-Proficient computer skills, including MS Office Suite, e-mail and ability to quickly learn database software applications, such as FileMaker. 
-Familiarity with DOE 10 CFR 851 Worker Safety and Health Program and Integrated Safety Management Systems.
-Experience with hazard identification and control in the use of hazardous production materials (HPM).
-Strong chemical safety training and experience – such as a minor in chemistry, experience as a chemical hygiene officer, or experience writing material safety datasheets.
-Experience working in a research and development environment – such as a laboratory or university.
-Ability to perform site work that can involve extreme weather conditions and moderate physical exertion.
-Ability to walk one mile continuously, able to stand continuously for two hours, able to lift and carry 45 pounds.
-Ability and willingness to wear respiratory protection, including a full-face respirator.
-Ability and willingness to occasionally use a full-face respirator with SCBA.
