ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Nature Conservancy magazine, the flagship publication of the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a dynamic senior editor with 7+ years experience.

 The senior editor is responsible for conceptualizing, developing, reporting, assigning, and editing feature stories and a variety of other articles for print, tablet and web. The successful candidate will have excellent reporting, editing and writing skills and have an intuitive sense of what makes a good story. The senior editor works collaboratively with Nature Conservancy field staff to identify stories that communicate the organization’s key messages. S/he hires and manages freelance writers and works closely with designers, photo editors and other magazine staff.

 Required knowledge/skills:

* Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or related field and 7+ years related experience or equivalent combination.

* Solid understanding of conservation issues required.

* Must have demonstrated experience in developing, assigning and editing features and in hiring and managing freelance writers.

* Excellent organizational and project management skills are a must.

* Experience with commercial magazines is a plus.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or related field and 7+ years related experience or equivalent combination.
  • Experience developing, assigning, editing and writing magazine features.
  • Experience working with freelance writers.
  • Experience with environmental and conservation issues.
  • Experience using MS Word on a Mac platform is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving abilities and discretion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a tight-knit team environment.
  • Exceptional analytic and creative skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and create compelling content in support of a magazine’s editorial vision.
  • Experience designing, directing and implementing complex projects, setting and meeting deadlines and ensuring accountability.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform high-caliber editing at a structural, line and copyediting level.
  • Ability to work under stress and to plan in advance to meet deadlines. Willingness to travel and to work long hours when required.
  • Newsstand/consumer magazine experience a plus.

SALARY INFORMATION

This full-time position will preferably be located in the Washington, D.C., metro area. The Nature Conservancy is an equal opportunity employer. Salary commensurate with experience, ranging from $55 to $70k plus benefits.
