We are looking to recruit a Senior Ecologist to work full time in our client’s offices in Birmingham working on a large infrastructure project.

The position is fixed term and full time. It could be undertaken as a secondment or employed by Biocensus.

The role is to provide assurance that scope of works are undertaken in compliance with the ecology requirements of the project, engage with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and assure that ecology deliverables from designers and contractors are of an appropriate technical quality.

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Assurance and technical review of the contractors’ ecological surveys and site studies (schedules, implementation and reporting);
  • Provide support and guidance to ensure contractor compliance with consents and licences;
  • Assurance of ecological aspects of contractor Site Method Statements and other contractor documents (as well as protected species issues these will include habitat translocation, invasive species management and biosecurity measures);
  • Provide support and guidance to the contractors in the development of Ecological Site Management Plans and ensuring appropriate stakeholder engagement;
  • Ensure that ecological monitoring is delivered in accordance with monitoring plans and protocols;
  • Ensure that long-term maintenance of ecological mitigation and compensation is undertaken in accordance with Ecological Site Management Plans;
  • Co-operate in all matters relating to health and safety, including following safe working procedures at all times;
  • You will be expected to actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work, and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in a relevant subject as a minimum;
  • A high level of ecological knowledge, experience, understanding and application;
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience of delivering successful ecology programmes for development schemes, preferably large infrastructure projects;
  • Broad knowledge of the ecological issues and environmental management;
  • Experience of working with and directing contractors;
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of protected species licensing issues and licence applications;
  • Experience in reporting on all ecology matters to a high standard;
  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively in a changing, high profile environment and deliver to tight timescales;
  • Full membership of CIEEM and a full driving licence.

Desirable:

  • Chartered status with a relevant body (e.g. CIEEM, Society for the Environment);
  • Educated to MSc level in a relevant environmental subject;
  • Holder of at least one European Protected Species licence (preferably great crested newts or bats);
  • Experience with habitat translocation and habitat creation schemes.

Salary: £40,000 – £45,000 per year dependent on experience.

Contract Type: Fixed term; full time. Option of secondment or employment.
