Great Ecology is looking for an experienced Senior Ecologist to join an interdisciplinary team of scientists, landscape architects, and planners. The successful candidate will lead a dedicated team of ecologists working on complex ecological restoration, ecological design and planning, mitigation banking, and Natural Resource Damage Assessment projects throughout the United States.  Expertise in species conservation, litigation support, and evaluation of contaminated sites a plus.  As an ecological consulting firm, our interdisciplinary scientists must be able to think critically and have excellent written and verbal communication skills to present scientific solutions to clients in a clear, professional manner. The person hired for this position will possess and promote these traits on a daily basis through their staff leadership and contributions to business development, technical report writing, client contact, and regulatory agency coordination.

Our New York operations have delivered and collaborated on numerous high profile projects throughout the region, such as Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Hunter’s Point South, Croton Water Treatment Plant, East River Waterfront Eco-Park, Woodbridge Waterfront Park and Brownfield Restoration, and coastal resiliency planning in the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary.  In addition, we work for several Fortune 100 firms, private real estate developers, and environmental law firms on a wide ranges of projects.  While the position is located in our New York office, our firm emphasizes cross geographic collaboration with staff throughout the company’s other offices.

In addition to project management and applying technical expertise to solve our clients’ needs, this position will play a key role in business development. The successful candidate will be an effective “seller/doer” that effectively balances business development, project management, and technical responsibilities. Willingness to travel to client and project site locations is expected. This successful candidate will work closely with the Regional Manager, the New York based team, and the company Director of Business Development to continue the legacy of technical and management excellence while building a successful and sustainable business practice that creates a challenging and fun workplace.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Manage multifaceted projects including comprehensive ecological planning efforts for ecological restoration, brownfield redevelopment, habitat mitigation, conservation, natural resource damage assessment, and environmental permitting;
  • Support, and be a catalyst for, strategic initiatives and business development for the office/region;
  • Conduct sales, marketing, and business development to expand client network, increase revenues, and enhance Great Ecology’s profile and reach;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and productive relationships with clients, teaming partners, and other stakeholders;
  • Successfully win and manage significant projects;
  • Create a challenging professional environment of innovation, opportunity, development and continuous improvement that supports company objectives;
  • Produce clear and concise technical reports and documents, including proposals, presentations, and client communications;
  • Conduct desktop planning, research and analysis, and field assessments (or direct the work of others);
  • Prepare permit applications and successfully shepherd projects through regulatory processes (e.g. Clean Water Act, State/City Environmental Quality Review Act, endangered species permitting/consultation, Natural Resource Damage Assessments); Ensure a commitment to quality and continuous improvement through innovation, creative thinking and improved results; and
  • Conduct seasoned consulting activities including: project management, tracking billable time, communicating schedules, directing/ supervising staff, and driving profitability.

About You
We are seeking applicants with the following background:

  • M.S. or higher degree in Ecology, Biology, or related science;
  • 8+ years of experience with an environmental consulting firm;
  • Demonstrated strong network and relationships in the industry, and in the region;
  • Demonstrated experience and results as a seller/doer in environmental consulting; 
  • Project experience demonstrating competent management of large-scale assignments;
  • Ability to solve complex problems and develop innovative, unique strategies and solutions that can be translated into an easily understood format, applicable to a wide audience;
  • Contribute a core capability to the firm (i.e., wetland science, applied ecological restoration, environmental permitting, stream ecology, terrestrial ecology, wildlife ecology, hydrology) at an advanced level of experience;
  • Excellent cross-functional communication skills: confidence in dealing with clients, regulators, and team members at all levels and functions;
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete projects on time and within budget;
  • Excellent writing and technical editing skills, with advanced experience in MS Office Suite; and
  • Rigorously detail oriented and committed to accuracy.
