Description

The Senior Director provides strategic and technical leadership on environmentally and socially responsible mining & energy development within CI's Center for Environmental Leadership in Business (CELB). The Senior Director leads and coordinates CI engagement of the mining & energy sector to innovate, demonstrate and share responsible business practices that can deliver positive impacts for healthy ecosystems and human well-being. Core responsibilities of the position include:

Strategic direction & team leadership: Leadership of CELB Responsible Mining & Energy program; Coordination and support of CI’s institutional approach to the sector; Contributing to CELB leadership teams and other CI leadership on mining & energy related issues and opportunities; Supporting integration of CELB corporate engagement activities into broader CI agendas; Creating an innovative, collegial and respectful work environment.

Account management, business development, & technical capacity: Contributing to major corporate partnerships & other funding proposals, including donor reporting; Supervising CELB & cross-institutional teams to ensure timely delivery of high quality outputs; Providing technical input to implement strategic projects with major mining & energy companies; Providing CELB Finance & Operations team with timely information needed for success of projects; Supporting CELB account leads responsible for major corporate relationships, through provision of subject-matter expertise and regular contact on program and project issues with senior-level counterparts at major corporations engaged with CI; Seeking new opportunities (through new and existing partners) that strategically advances CI’s mission in the mining and energy sectors; Integrating the diversity of individual and programmatic knowledge at CI into corporate engagement strategies.

Communication & capacity building: Representing and promoting CELB and CI to key internal and external audiences on mining, oil and gas related issues e.g. conferences, industry associations, multi-stakeholder platforms, publications, media interviews, key donors and board members; Supporting growth of techncial capacity for responsible mining, oil and gas engagement with target audiences, internally and externally.

The Senior Director has the authority to:

  • Develop, in consultation with the CELB SVP, strategy for CELB’s Responsible Mining & Energy Program. 
  • Lead implementation of CELB Responsible Mining & Energy Program strategy and coordinate implementation of CI’s institutional sector strategy on Mining & Energy.
  • Represent CI to external audiences.
  • Represent CELB on selected CI teams. 
  • Manage, support and recruit staff in CELB’s Responsible Mining & Energy Program. The staff team currently includes 3 directors.
  • Manage and support staff in other CI divisions as agreed by relevant divisional lead.
  • Other duties as assigned

Working Conditions:

  • Position is based in the CI-Virginia HQ office.
  • Requires domestic and international travel up to 40% of the time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Masters in natural resource management, sustainability or similar
  • At least 5 years of experience relevant to mining & energy sector, with emphasis on social and environmental sustainability issues
  • Private sector experience
  • Strong project and team management skills, including international partners from diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Proven record of successful fundraising for sustainability projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Preferred:

  • Non-profit experience
  • Demonstrated passion for international conservation and development
  • Foreign language proficiency e.g. French, Spanish, Portuguese.
