Senior Director Policy & Advocacy, Animal Research Issues

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Senior Director Policy & Advocacy for its Animal Research Issues (ARI) section.  The main responsibility of this position is to provide leadership, direction, and budgetary oversight to the ARI section under the supervision of the Vice President and assume responsibility for department when the VP is on travel or otherwise unavailable. Other duties include, but are not limited to: direct and manage Chimps Deserve Better and Pain & Distress Campaigns by conducting activities to influence both public policy and corporate policy; coordinate and expand outreach to the public via publicity and grassroots efforts; coordinate activities and foster communication among certain stakeholders such as animal protection groups, chimpanzee/animal sanctuaries, sympathetic scientists and others working on common goals; primary media spokesperson; strategic planning of section activities.  Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or equivalent along with four to six years’ experience in biological sciences highly desired.  Project management skills and strong written and verbal communication skills strongly preferred. Candidates must also have the ability to comprehend and critique literature regarding biomedical research. The salary range for this position is from the mid $60’s to the low $70’s.
