JOB SUMMARY: American Rivers (AR) seeks a Director of Leadership Gifts to lead and manage a comprehensive individual major gifts program. S/he provides strategic leadership to help the Board; President, program and development staffs meet the organization’s annual and long-term development/fundraising goals. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, high energy development professional who is interested in making a difference in the field of conservation. This position reports to the Senior Vice President for Development.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Manage the efforts of Major Gift Team to identify, cultivate, and solicit potential donors.
  • Develop and execute major donor cultivation and stewardship events in key markets; help create a robust calendar of such events focused on priority program areas and geographic markets
  • Develop and maintain a Major Donor portfolio.
  • Continue the implementation of the Regional plan strategy and build Regional Committees.
  • Manage the annual fund director and implement a succession strategy from membership to major donors.
  • Manage and strengthen the major gifts program infrastructure including stewardship, prospect research and events.
  • Prepare fund-raising reports and analyses for Sr. VP of Development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of fundraising experience and a demonstrated track record of major donor solicitation.
  • Must be a skilled leader, capable of directing, motivating, and inspiring volunteers and staff.
  • High energy level, flexible, self-motivated, and self-confident.
  • Articulate with strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Strategic thinker; highly organized and able to meet deadlines.
  • Strong time, budget, and organizational management skills, including the capacity to work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with environmental/conservation funding community is a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Yes

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Normal office environment with extended periods at a computer and some travel required.  Some late hours and/or weekends may be required in connection with events or critical deadlines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Little or no exertion. May occasionally lift and carry boxes of supplies or publications.
