The Wilderness Society (TWS), a national non-profit organization whose mission is to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places, is seeking a full-time Senior Director, Membership & Mid-Level Giving to join its Philanthropy team in Washington, DC.

The Senior Director, Membership and Mid-Level Giving manages a team that is responsible for building and supporting The Wilderness Society’s largest group of financial contributors (120,000+ donors contributing up to $9,999 each).  The Membership and Mid-Level Giving program generates $7 million annually in unrestricted revenue and provides a pipeline from on which other development program revenues are built.  Through direct mail, telemarketing, digital strategies, and list rental marketing, the Senior Director is responsible for aggressive acquisition, renewal, and upgrade goals.  The Sr. Director also oversees all aspects of membership services working both with internal staff and external partners to address all customer service requests for Membership and Mid-Level Giving.  Additionally, the Senior Director’s efforts will contribute to gift planning lead generation and community building for our advocacy efforts.  
 
The Senior Director’s role will support a myriad of needs: to inform, advise and persuade donors and members; to inform, coordinate and integrate staff and other units within TWS to work together; and to inform, advise, negotiate, and continually evaluate the effectiveness of external partners.  The Senior Director will also produce detailed analysis of all direct response programs and will work closely with The Wilderness Society’s Strategic Services Team responsible for income processing.

The Director of Membership and Mid-Level Giving will lead the integration of these priorities throughout his/her work, from expanding our partner relationships to bringing an equity lens to all facets of this role.

**This position is located in our Washington, DC office. No relocation expenses will be provided.
 
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Directs a multi-channel creative strategy working across the organization utilizing all areas of expertise including Membership, Philanthropy Communications (e.g., publications, web strategy), Conservation Programs, and external partners to create an integrated donor strategy and messages to maximize revenue generation.
  • Manages an aggressive solicitation schedule that includes mailing 6 million pieces of mail annually, including more than 150 unique solicitations.
  • Directs and monitors the development and implementation of a multi-million-dollar revenue and expense budget to ensure maximum productivity and cost effectiveness.
  • Plays a lead role in the database system upgrades and management.  Oversees data analysis and segmentation strategies necessary to implement programs.
  • Supervises, manage and empower a highly skilled and results-oriented Membership and Mid-Level Giving team that is integrated within the organization and aligned to help achieve TWS goals.
  • Oversees team (both internal staff and external partners) responsible for membership services, and ensures all donor issues are addressed in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Responsible for keeping abreast of laws and regulations that have an impact on direct response programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
 
The ideal candidate will have the following experience and qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in direct marketing or an equivalent combination of related training and relevant experience.
  • Experience in managing a national direct marketing program with emphasis on acquisition, donor/mid-level giving programs and web/on-line to increase number of members/donors and net income.
  • Experience in using program information, current events, trend data and analysis to develop creative concepts that position and convey a compelling value proposition to donors and potential donors
  • Understanding of complex, complicated organization structures and ability to manage multiple charitable programs.
  • Adept at planning, prioritizing, organizing, following through, and analyzing and evaluating results.
  • Able to work independently in a changing environment, meet tight deadlines, exercise good judgment and decision-making to set and meet results-oriented goals.
  • Energetic, creative analytical problem-solver with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience in management of back-end processing, data analysis and segmentation strategies.
  • Experience in leading and managing teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives.  This includes a track record of successful recruitment, cultivation and retention of highly skilled staff with racial and gender diversity.
  • Experience and demonstrated leadership integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout organizational policies, practices, and culture preferred.
  • A collaborative leader with strong intellect, emotional intelligence, creativity, flexibility, initiative and a track record of working in a solution oriented manner.
  • Superb organizational and interpersonal skills and self-awareness combined with the ability to maintain an effective and supportive working environment while prioritizing competing demands.
