Description
ForestEthics has helped pioneer a new approach to environmental activism by focusing its efforts on the marketplace. Much of what gives ForestEthics its distinctive strength is our rare capacity to mobilize pressure on corporations from the outside and create incentives from the inside.  We complement our public campaigns with a wide array of corporate engagement activities, working with companies to maximize environmental gains. Often collaborative in nature, it is based on building relationships, creating incentives for improvement, holding companies accountable to their agreements, providing value, and leveraging action from corporate leaders.

Having the capacity to deliver both a classic “adversarial” style campaign when needed, as well as the collaborative, relationship-based approach of our Corporate Action Program (CAP), is a defining characteristic of ForestEthics.  The fertile ground created within the dynamic tension of these two processes of change has been a key component of our past victories.  The successful candidate will play a significant role in expanding our Corporate Action Program and developing the next chapter of our history.  With an unparalleled record of accomplishment, we are poised to bring our creativity and resolve to a broadening array of environmental challenges, including climate change.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position will share responsibility for growing our successful Corporate Action Program, expanding and maintaining relationships with top executives and sustainability officers at Fortune 500 companies, and developing innovative strategies to encourage corporations to adopt and implement stronger environmental policies.   He/she will work in close collaboration with other CAP staff and ForestEthics departments to further the organization’s mission.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

•    Developing and strengthening company relationships to maximize the CAP company portfolio, and ensure that it is broad enough to support campaign objectives in 2009 and thereafter.
•    Creating mechanisms to strengthen corporate environmental performance, expand or deepen our partnerships, and track and report on implementation.
•    Persuading high visibility, leadership companies or financial institutions to adopt stronger environmental policies, with a particular focus on forest products and climate.
•    Developing effective tools and incentives to hold corporations accountable to their commitments and promote continual improvement.
•    Demonstrating the business case for forest and climate protection and growing our reputation with the private sector and governments.
•    Organize and participate in Roundtables and other events with key corporate leaders, scientists, and stakeholders to leverage movement within the sector.
•    Developing corporate best practices, marketplace standards, and model policies.
•    Recognizing corporate leaders and providing ways for them to act as “ambassadors” to other companies, to reward and encourage corporate leadership, help cultivate new corporate relationships, and to ensure we influence key market sectors.
•    Representing CAP and ForestEthics at important conferences and other corporate outreach opportunities.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

•    5-10+ years of professional experience with progressively increasing responsibility in market campaigns, corporate social responsibility, supply-chain management, or sustainability, preferably in a pertinent industry (paper, forest products, energy sector, financial/investment, or non-profit sector).
•    A record of accomplishment in a challenging for-profit or non-profit work environment in a related field.
•    Proven track record motivating the corporate community, developing productive relationships and achieving shared goals, especially when pushing beyond a company’s instinctive comfort level.
•    Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, and manage performance and evaluations.
•    Experience in developing creative solutions to complex problems, thinking boldly, and putting ideas into action.
•    The ability to think on one’s feet and react graciously under pressure.
•    Superior verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to establish credibility and articulate complex campaign issues and ForestEthics’ mission and goals to a wide range of audiences.
•    Demonstrated negotiating, teamwork, and collaboration skills.
•    Personally well organized and accustomed to high professional expectations.
•    Interest in and passion for the mission of ForestEthics.
