Description

Auckland Council is one of the largest local authorities in the Australasia and is responsible for providing essential public services and facilities to nearly 1.5 million people.  We are dedicated to making Auckland the best place in the world to work, study, invest, and enjoy an outstanding quality of life.

This particular role is located in the Earthworks and Contaminated Land team in the Natural Resources and Specialist Input Unit, which is part of the Resource Consents department.  Our aim is to deliver resource consents that are consistent, easy to use, and provide quality outcomes to customers and the Auckland region's environment.

About the role

We are looking for a senior environmental specialist with experience in environmental management or an understanding of sedimentation processes and the potential direct, indirect and cumulative effects of sediment discharges. The Earthworks and Contaminated Land team is based in the Auckland CBD, but we cover the entire Auckland region with the work we do.  The successful candidate will be working with a wide range of customers across the region assessing and processing complex consents, and compliance monitoring.  The Earthworks and Contaminated Land  team is passionate about preventing and minimising the risks of erosion and sediment discharges to land and water whilst promoting sustainable development in a fast growing city.

Skills and experience

  • An understanding of the management of erosion and sediment discharges and sedimentation processes in regard to land disturbing activities including  methods available to avoid, remedy, or mitigate these effects is essential.
  • A tertiary qualification in environmental science or a related engineering discipline
  • Preferably 5 years related experience undertaking environmental and/or ecological assessments, preferably within a planning context
  • Experience of processing resource consents is also desirable

The role will suit a senior environmental scientist/ecologist/ specialist who is keen to apply their skills to assessing the impacts of development on the receiving environment.

With excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to apply scientific principles into a practical context, you will excel within the role, broaden your experience, and enhance your environmental awareness of the Auckland region environment.

Working in a fast-paced team environment, this role is varied, motivating, and always challenging.  If you are focused on the sustainable urban and rural development of the region, then this exciting opportunity could be your next career move
