ForestEthics Canada’s mission is to protect endangered forests and wild places, wildlife, and human wellbeing. We catalyze environmental leadership among industry, governments and communities by running hard-hitting and highly effective campaigns that leverage public dialogue and pressure to achieve our goals.  Our current campaigns focus on fighting climate change, protecting wild places and on transforming industries that use products that come from these places. Our efforts have helped secure the protection of more than 26.3 million hectares of forest and transformed the environmental practices of Fortune 500 companies including Dell, Staples, Office Depot, Victoria’s Secret, Williams-Sonoma, and many others. 

THE POSITION

The Senior Communications and Media Manager will envision, plan, and execute communications strategies for our Sacred Headwaters and Tar Sands campaigns. This is a half time (20 hr/week) position with excellent benefits and is based in our Vancouver, B.C. office. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work closely with campaigners to develop communications plans and strategic opportunities that leverage media to achieve victories
  • Develop and maintain relationships with reporters, television producers and other news decision-makers
  • Develop regional, national and international communication and media strategies, including the development of key messages
  • Work closely with the Communications Department to create online communications strategies, including Social Network (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and ongoing updates
  • Coordinate and communicate media strategies as appropriate with communications staff at ForestEthics (a partner based in the United States)
  • Produce written materials including press releases, press advisories, op-eds, letter to the editors, fact sheets, etc.
  • Identify, brief and train spokespeople
  • Provide ongoing advice about media aspects of each campaign
  • Facilitate the needs of media requests including background materials, spokespeople, etc.
  • Write quickly, succinctly, and respond efficiently to breaking news
  • Coordinate media events such as press conferences
  • Create and maintain media lists

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years experience working in a media outlet or communications/public relations department
  • Sound news judgment and solid contacts in both news and feature media
  • Knowledge of forest issues and market campaigns combined with an interest in, or passion for, the mission of ForestEthics Canada
  • Proven experience in writing and editing for news and feature media
  • Experience writing query letters and pitching to feature media outlets
  • Ability to think and act strategically, yet can also think and write creatively
  • Basic understanding of social media campaigns and matrix and able to write online materials
  • Very high language skills as demonstrated by the ability to:
    a)    read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents;
    b)    respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community;
    c)    write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format;
    d)    effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • High math skills as demonstrated by the ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, fractions, percentages, and ratios
  • High reasoning skills as demonstrated by the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Computer proficiency in basic computer applications, including spreadsheet, word processing and database software, contact management systems and the internet
  • Demonstrated track record of collaboration and strong interpersonal skills yet comfortable working independently
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment and handling numerous tasks at one time
  • Ability to travel domestically 5%
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
