Summary

World Land Trust (WLT) is at the forefront in developing effective REDD+ and self-certified carbon projects, with an expanding portfolio of projects, including the dual certified Paraguay Forest Conservation Project, the Khe Nuoc Trong project in Vietnam and WLT’s self-certified offsetting projects in Ecuador. WLT is now seeking a Senior Carbon Programme Manager, whose role will be to manage its carbon programme and work with the Director of Conservation to develop WLT’s carbon programme strategy, new funding streams and expand the range of carbonprojects and project areas.

 

What you will doing

This is an exciting opportunity to help build on WLT’s ground-breaking achievements in implementing effective carbon projects around the world.  You will be co-ordinating and leading WLT’s carbon programme, developing new funding streams and expanding the range of carbon projects and areas where WLT is working. You will need to be able to work independently, while at the same time building relationships and collaborating effectively with a range of stakeholders, including international partners, REDD+ developers and funders, and with WLT colleagues. The role will involve overseas travel (sometimes at short notice).

 

Who we are looking for

Your extensive experience of working in carbon-financed project development and your excellent technical knowledge of REDD+ will be essential for this role.  You will have a proven track record in business development and securing funding for carbon programmes. You will be passionate about wildlife conservation, and committed furthering the mission and ethos of WLT.  You will have excellent communication skills, and be comfortable in communicating technical and non-technical subjects to a diverse range of audiences. Self-motivated and able to work independently, you will be very much a team player, and will bring positive leadership skills to WLT’s carbon programme.

 

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Co-ordinate and lead the organisation’s carbon programme, including overseeing both REDD+ certified projects and self-certified projects.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Conservation, develop the carbon programme’s strategy, assessing its capacity and potential for expansion along with possible avenues for securing REDD+ funding (including voluntary, bilateral and multilateral funding mechanisms).
  • Support WLT in securing relevant funding opportunities.
  • Provide technical input into WLT’s existing carbon projects and strengthen and expand the organisation’s self-certified portfolio of projects.
  • Provide strategic and technical support for the design and implementation of new carbon initiatives.
  • Review and remain up to date on global developments in REDD+ thinking and broader payment for ecosystem service (PES) fields, and communicate and seek strategic opportunities for the organisation.
  • Undertake an active role in communicating and promoting WLT’s carbon work to a diverse range of supporters and partners, including both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Work closely in the strategic development of WLT’s carbon projects and wider PES projects, and in other WLT work areas as specified by the Director of Conservation.
  • Line management of a small team involved in WLT’s carbon programmes.

 

Person specification

Formal qualifications

  • Educated to a degree or higher degree level in a relevant subject area, or have equivalent knowledge and experience from working in this field.

Experience and knowledge

  • 5-10 years of experience working in carbon-financed project development and implementation, including the design and implementation of REDD+ projects (essential) preferably under both VCS and CCB methodologies.
  • A track record in business development and a securing funding for carbon programmes (essential).
  • Excellent understanding and knowledge of REDD+ and associated understanding of evaluating carbon, biodiversity and community benefits (essential).
  • Experience of speaking and effectively communicating to a diverse ranges of audiences (essential).
  • Knowledge of mapping techniques (GIS) and analytical techniques relevant to carbon projects (essential).
  • Track record of working collaboratively with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), governments, intergovernmental organisations and other actors in the development of REDD+ or other PES or large-scale projects (desirable).
  • Previous experience of line managing staff and overseeing large projects (desirable).
  • Experience of working internationally in varied cultures and countries (desirable).

  • Good communication skills including a demonstrated ability to write high quality technical and non-technical documents, as well as public speaking and delivering presentations (essential).

  • Excellent written and spoken English (essential) and foreign language ability (desirable)

Location The role is based at the World Land Trust’s headquarters in Halesworth, Suffolk, UK.
