Description

Global Witness is an international organisation that investigates and campaigns to prevent natural resource-related conflict and corruption and associated environmental and human rights abuses. We collect irrefutable evidence through our investigations and combine it with powerful advocacy for change.

The Afghan government and its international allies agree that the country’s post-transition (2014) stability and development are primarily dependent on two key factors: security, and its untapped mineral wealth, estimated to be worth $3 trillion.  Despite some encouraging progress on natural resource governance, the country remains extremely vulnerable to becoming a victim of “the resource curse”.

We are looking for an experienced, Senior Campaigner to play a lead role in our work to help build natural resource governance in Afghanistan, working with existing coalitions and building constituencies of support amongst civil society, business and governmental actors.

You should have:

  • Substantial experience of devising and undertaking field investigations in developing countries
  • Substantial experience of leading high-level advocacy of governments, intergovernmental organisations and companies, with demonstrated impact
  • A proven track record of writing, editing, and producing a range of written materials to a consistently high standard for a variety of audiences
  • Experience of developing and implementing advocacy and campaign strategies
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Experience of conducting media interviews with a range of national and international media
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently, including to high-risk environments
  • Direct experience of working in Afghanistan and knowledge of the region would be ideal as would be knowledge of Dari or Pashto or of Farsi.
