Description


Job Title: Senior Campaign Representative, Texas - Beyond Coal

Department: Conservation

Location: Austin, Texas

Reports To: Regional Campaign Director

Context: Plans, directs, and manages all aspects of the Beyond Coal campaign in Texas and associated southern central states.

Scope: Develops and directs Texas state efforts to move from coal to clean energy options.  Collaborates with various internal departments, programs, partners, and volunteer leadership to ensure execution of strategic coordinated state-based campaigns moving states off of coal to renewable energy and energy efficiency.  Ensures strategic alignment of campaign with regional goals and objectives.  Manages and monitors campaign resources and expenses. Coordinates capacities and departments ensuring focus on activities that achieve Beyond Coal campaign outcomes.  Creates and executes state-based campaign work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.  Identifies resources needed and assigns individual responsibilities.  Manages day-to-day operational aspects of the campaign.  Prepares and submits weekly progress reports.  Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, allies, other organizations, and the public.

Campaign: The Beyond Coal campaign is a nationwide grassroots effort to eliminate coal's contribution to global warming no later than 2030 and replace the existing coal infrastructure with a clean energy economy fueled by wind, solar, and geothermal. The Beyond Coal campaign is working to stop the construction of new coal-fired power plants, retire and replace the existing fleet of coal plants, and keep the U.S. coal reserves underground and out of world markets. Job Activities:

1. Directs Beyond Coal campaign efforts in Texas to move from coal to clean energy options.  Develops and implements strategic campaign working in collaboration with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Chapters, Communications Department, Organizing and Online Organizing capacities, Sierra Club’s programs, and volunteer leadership.

2. In collaboration with Lone Star Chapter and organizing staff, engages key players in state power generation, state elected and appointed decision makers, and executives in the distributed generation and efficiency industries to assure advancement of Sierra Club’s priorities. 

3. Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to staff and volunteers.  Provides conservation training and motivation to staff and volunteers.

4. Works to develop and ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.

5. Directs media outreach activities related to the campaign/program in collaboration with the Lone Star Chapter.  Serves as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer media exposure.

6. Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.

7. Provides analysis and support of campaign budget and quarterly forecasts.

8. In cooperation with Advancement department, participates in major donor and foundation solicitation and cultivation.

9. Represents the Sierra Club to the general public and to strategic allies.

10. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.

11. Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.


Seasonal Activities:

Heavier seasonal workloads may occur as a result of project deadlines, staff absences and vacancies, and during peak activity periods.  Frequent weekend and/or evening work may be required.


Knowledge & Skills:

-- B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science, or a closely related field.

-- 3-5 years of experience as a senior representative or in a comparable position in another organization that includes substantial experience planning and managing a state or regional level legislative campaign, including developing strategy, organizing, lobbying, media relations, fundraising, program/employee management, budget planning and management, and working with senior level political and business leaders.

-- Expert knowledge of energy solution issues. Knowledge of clean energy industry a plus.

-- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.

-- 3-5 years of prior experience in fundraising that includes foundation relations, individual solicitation of major gifts, and grant-funded project development and oversight.  Demonstrated effectiveness as a major gift fundraiser.

-- Substantial experience, demonstrated skill, and ability in national media relations.  Includes effective television and radio presence, as well as knowledge of media technologies including video, radio, and print production processes.

-- Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.

-- Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.
