Description

Job Title: Senior Campaign Representative, Nearby Nature

Department: Conservation

Reports To: Senior Campaign Director, Our Wild America

Context: Plans, directs and manages all aspects, including financial, strategic and staff of the Nearby Nature strategic initiative within the Our Wild America campaign. Develops and determines strategies and priorities. Secures funding to grow the Initiative.

Scope: The Director of the Nearby Nature initiative has overall program and staff management responsibility, actively raises funding from donors and foundations, and provides experienced leadership and strategic planning for the initiative. Manages and monitors expenses, assigns priorities and timetables, plans and develops strategies, evaluates initiative/program effectiveness. Represents the Sierra Club to decision makers, the media and other organizations. Actively engages volunteer and chapter leaders in the Initiative. Lead national level coalitions.  Program supervision responsibility includes supervising employee performance, developing/managing campaign activities, developing fundraising proposals, raising funds, and overseeing program budget. Act as a senior advisor to staff colleagues and volunteers.     

Job Activities:

  1. Serves as supervisor, when applicable, of employees assigned to the initiative, including Sierra Club based staff for the Outdoors Alliance for Kids.
  2. Directs the Nearby Nature initiative within the Our Wild America campaign. Works with national staff and volunteers to achieve significant outcomes for the campaign.
  3. Directs Sierra Club’s involvement in the Outdoors Alliance for Kids and represents the Sierra Club or a designee on the Steering Committee.
  4. Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to staff and volunteers.
  5. Works to develop and ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles within the initiative. Co-leads, with a volunteer, the Nearby Nature Delivery Team.
  6. Directs media outreach activities related to the initiative, including developing media outreach plans, serving as Sierra Club spokesperson to national media outlets, and promotes volunteer media exposure.
  7. Directs the development and preparation of Nearby Nature outreach materials.
  8. Plans and develops projects that secure restricted funding, handles on-going relationships with foundations and major donors involved with the projects.
  9. Represents the Sierra Club to decision makers, the media, the general public and other organizations.
  10. Develops relationships with public officials and their staffs. Oversees development and implementation of lobby campaigns associated with the assigned national program.
  11. Develops and advances high profile national partnerships with government agencies, business and other non-governmental organizations to advance initiative goals
  12. Provide leadership in integrating Our Wild America and Sierra Club Outdoors opportunities. .
  13. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.

 

Knowledge & Skills: 

-- B.A/B.S required and M.A./M.S. degree preferred in Environmental Studies, Business, Political Science, Education, Outdoor Recreation and Environmental Education or a closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

-- 3-5 years experience planning and implementing a national level legislative campaign or program, including strategy, organizing, lobbying, media, and work with senior level political leaders.

-- Experience developing and leading diverse national coalitions, including developing coalition governance and organizational structures.

-- Experience establishing partnerships with government agencies and corporate leaders to advance shared goals.

-- Excellent knowledge, experience and expertise in the fields of environmental or outdoor education, urban greening and/or youth development and leadership.

-- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.

-- Experience with managing complex budgets/operations.

-- Proven fundraising success with donors and foundations.

-- Experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.

 

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.
