Description

Job Title: Senior Campaign Representative, Beyond Coal Campaign

Department: Conservation

Reports To: Western Regional Campaign Director, Beyond Coal Campaign

Context: Plans, directs, and manages the strategies, implementation, and activities of the Beyond Coal campaign’s large-scale renewable energy advocacy in California and other assigned states.

Scope: The Senior Campaign Representative is responsible for the planning, coordination, and direction of the Beyond Coal campaign’s large-scale renewable energy advocacy strategies and activities in California and assigned states. Collaborates with and coordinates the campaign’s activities with the state Chapter(s), volunteers, and appropriate staffing resources. Develops strategies, creates state level work plans, establishes priorities and benchmarks, provides leadership, evaluates campaign effectiveness, and manages and monitors campaign resources and expenses. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and the public.

Job Activities:

1. Creates and implements Beyond Coal campaign large-scale renewable energy strategies and activities in California and assigned states. Develops and implements the state-level aspects of a strategic campaign. Collaborates with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, state Chapter, Communications Department, Organizing and On-line Organizing Capacities, Sierra Club’s programs, and volunteer leadership to ensure the execution of a state-based campaign to ramp up large-scale renewable energy.

2. Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to staff and volunteers. Provides conservation training and motivation to staff and volunteers.

3. Works to develop and ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.

4. Directs media outreach activities related to the campaign/program. Serves as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer media exposure.

5. Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.

6. Provides analysis and support of campaign budget and quarterly forecasts.

7. In cooperation with Advancement, participates in major donor and foundation solicitation and cultivation.

8. Represents the Sierra Club to the general public and to strategic allies.

9. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration.

10. Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.
 

Knowledge & Skills:

-- B.A./B.S. degree in an environmental or related field, or an advanced degree in energy-related issues or law, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

-- 3-5 years experience in the planning and implementation of campaigns, which includes experience with program management, planning, and managing a local or statewide campaign, including strategy, organizing, media, fundraising, budget planning and management, and work with political and business leaders.

-- Demonstrated effectiveness as a major gift fundraiser.

-- Expert knowledge of energy solution issues. Knowledge of renewable energy industry and economics.

-- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.

-- Substantial experience, demonstrated skill, and ability in national media relations. Includes effective television and radio presence, knowledge of media technologies including video, radio, and print production processes.

-- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with volunteers.

-- Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and John Muir Local.
