Description

This On-call position will be located in either our Seattle, WA or Portland, OR office.

In this role, you will conduct detailed botanical surveys as a part of a team and under the direction of a botany crew leader.  Surveys may be conducted at various sites in both Washington and Oregon and possibly California.  Additional responsibilities may include vegetation mapping, data entry, collection and preparation of voucher specimens, and report preparation.

Desired qualifications are listed below:

  • Expertise with the technical keys in Hitchcock et al. "Flora of the Pacific Northwest" or “Flora of North America”, including proficiency with identification of species in Cyperaceae, Poaceae, and Scrophulariaceae;
  • Strong attention to detail preparing field notes, survey forms and sighting reports, legible handwriting strongly desired.
  • Competency with the use of using aerial photos, USGS topographic map, compass (adjusted for declination), digital camera, and GPS (for Zone 10 NAD 83) in order to accurately document survey and sighting locations;
  • Ability to create (or work closely with associate who will create) accurate GIS shapefiles of surveyed areas and sightings of rare plants and/or infestation of noxious weeds;

A Bachelor’s degree (Masters or Ph.D. desired) in botany, ecology, or related science and 10+ years experience is required.  High level of familiarity with the local flora of the western Cascades, including recognition of most species by vegetative characteristics and knowledge of common species of bryophytes and lichens and the ability to distinguish these from rare species required. Experience with botanical keys and the Washington and Oregon flora, including rare species and noxious weeds, familiarity with WDFW and USFWS floristic survey protocols required.  Successful applicants must be willing to travel and work in remote areas with dense vegetation and/or steep terrain, navigate using topographic maps and/or GPS, and work in summer weather conditions.
