Position Summary:

The Senior Associate will contribute to the implementation of a Rainforest Alliance-wide monitoring initiative to track the attributes and effects of sustainability standards, certification, and associated technical assistance projects applied on more than 55 million hectares of land in the agriculture, forestry, and tourism sectors, and in the area of climate change mitigation. S/he will support all aspects of this initiative, including the development of data collection tools and systems; training field staff in monitoring methods; data analysis; and technical writing and presentations to share monitoring results internally and externally. S/he will also contribute to selected research initiatives, in collaboration with external research partners. As an integral part of Rainforest Alliance’s Evaluation & Research team, the Senior Associate will contribute to the team’s overall objectives of implementing robust monitoring and evaluation methods, training, knowledge sharing, and learning throughout the organization.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with colleagues in Rainforest Alliance’s certification unit (RA-Cert), Field Implementation team, and the Sustainable Agriculture Network to institute data collection methods, tools, and processes to collect high quality monitoring data;
  • Develop training materials and provide or support training of field staff related to the implementation of the monitoring initiative;
  • Analyze the data collected through this initiative and prepare high-quality written reports and graphic presentations of these analyses for internal and external audiences;
  • Contribute to selected research projects and support collaborations with external research partners to better understand the effects of standards and certification;
  • Carry out research and analysis to support the Evaluation & Research team in providing scientific input into the Rainforest Alliance’s strategies, initiatives, and projects; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, forestry, international development, social sciences, economics, ecology, natural resources management, or a related field;
  • Master’s degree one of the above fields is preferred;
  • At least four years of progressively responsible work experience, including at least two years of experience conducting monitoring, evaluation, or research, preferably related to agriculture, forestry, or rural development;
  • Experience conducting or supervising field data collection, preferably related to agriculture, forestry, or rural development;
  • Experience managing large datasets, conducting statistical analysis, and preparing graphs or other data visualizations;
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical software package, such as Stata;
  • Experience preparing reports and communicating complex ideas for both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Excellent English communication skills and superior writing abilities;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to collaborate with colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds;
  • Ability to multi-task and deliver high quality work products under strict deadlines;
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and detail-oriented;
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally at least 25% of the time;
  • Experience working in developing countries is a plus;
  • Proficiency in geographic information systems (GIS) is a plus; and
  • Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
