Senior Analyst – Remediation Projects
Vacancy: 1529
Closing Date: 11.00 pm Sunday 9 February 2014
This is a full time, permanent role located in our Wellington office.
Kiwis have a unique connection with the environment. Like no other country, our environment defines who we are and what we believe in. The Ministry for the Environment has the challenging task of environmental stewardship for a prosperous New Zealand. This is no easy task, and not everyone is cut out to deal with the enormity and complexity of the issues we are faced with.
But if you think you might be cut out for it, we'd like to hear from you. You'll need to be: tough; comfortable working with uncertainty; confident dealing with community groups, local and central Government and politicians; and comfortable working with Maori/iwi.
In this job, you'll be fixing some of the environmental oversights from the past, and helping to make sure that we don't make the same mistakes again in the future. You'll lead co-ordination of the fresh water remediation programme. This can be extremely frustrating and extremely rewarding all at the same time; this is not a job for the faint-hearted.
While the role focuses on leading the team's freshwater remediation work programme, you will need to demonstrate an ability to adapt to changing priorities, deal with ambiguity/complex issues, and contribute to the team's broader work programme (this includes but is not limited to the remediation of contaminated sites and incident management – like the Rena Long-term Environmental Recovery Plan). You will also be expected contribute to the work of the Operations Directorate as an active participant within the various cohorts.
To be successful in this role you'll need:
• to be able to link teams, departments and agencies and to drive influence across a range of internal and external stakeholders
• to be an excellent communicator and a skilled influencer. You will have excellent relationship management skills, be solutions focussed and bring a positive, adaptable and can-do attitude to your work.
You'll also need:
• knowledge and understanding of the freshwater management in New Zealand
• an understanding of and experience in central and preferably local government processes
• an understanding of good practice project management
• well developed stakeholder management and influencing skills
• competence in effective risk and issue management
• contract development, negotiation and management
• a commitment to continuous improvement.
You'll be reporting to the Manager, Remediation Projects in the Operations Directorate. This part of the Ministry is hands-on and outwards facing. You'll need to be prepared to roll up your sleeves and to get stuff done. The Remediation projects team makes a significant contribution towards improving the quality, flow and allocation of freshwater in New Zealand.
As the lead for the freshwater remediation work programme you'll be responsible for:
• leading, planning and managing the work programme, identifying priorities for delivery and ensuring deadlines are met, and ensuring risks and issues are appropriately managed
• delivering multiple outputs and dealing with multiple priorities
• working with nationally significant Freshwater remediation projects funded through the Fresh Start for Freshwater Fund Clean-up Fund
• building and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders (including iwi)
• providing quality advice to the Minister, senior management and others
• mentoring and coaching peers and other staff to improve their engagement, communication skills and performance
• developing and managing contracts with local government to deliver on project outcomes
