Description

Senior advisor (m/f) African Eco-Labelling Mechanism

Country of Assignment and Location

Kenia, Nairobi

Project/Field of Activity

The African Union (AU), UNEP and UNECA in cooperation with the African Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production (ARSCP) have launched the development of the African Eco-labelling Mechanism (AEM). The German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety (BMU) has been supporting ARSCP within the framework of the Task Force on Cooperation with Africa founded in the course of the Marrakech Process. Funded by BMU’s International Climate Initiative, the main project objectives comprise setting up the AEM Secretariat at the African RegionalStandardisation Organisation (ARSO), establishing the AEM’s governance structure, developing a benchmarking system to evaluate existing sustainability standards and defining a viable strategy to ensure long-term financial self-sufficiency of the AEM. The marketing of the eco-label in cooperation with national and international partners will be another decisive task of the project. Finally, the project aims at developing the capacity of African accreditation and certification bodies.

Responsibilities

As member of the project staff you will cooperate with the Executive Manager and the other project staff to ensure the project’s success and the achievement of the objectives agreed upon with BMU. In close cooperation with the Executive Manager and the project manager of GTZ’s Kenya office, you will support the project’s steering and implementation, the management of project activities and capacity building measures for our partners as well as the project’s monitoring and evaluation. You will give technical and methodical advice on the establishment of a regional sustainability label and you will coordinate the project with regional and national authorities. Furthermore, you will cooperate closely with the advisory team from the responsible department at GTZ headquarters, which will support you in the design of the initiative, and in particular in the development of the benchmarking system and the design of the marketing concept.

Qualifications

You have a Master’s degree in agricultural, political, social, economic or environmental sciences and you have already gained at least 5 years of experience in management or consulting. Furthermore, you have sound expertise and experience in advising and developing voluntary sustainability standards. Additional knowledge in the field of climate change adaptation would be an asset. You have excellent communication and networking skills, you are able to adjust to multiple demands and shifting priorities and you are accustomed to act in a diplomatic and sensitive manner in a multicultural working environment. Proficiency in English and French is required.

Qualified Women, especially from Francophone West Africa, are encouraged to apply.
