Description

At its core, climate change is an issue of equity, both within the current generation and across generations. Climate change affects children and communities in poor and vulnerable communities now, and its impact will only grow over time – further affecting today's children and irrevocably altering the world that future generations will inherit. Climate change is also one of the principal development challenges of the twenty first century. Its impacts will be felt globally, ensuring that no one will be immune to its effects. We need you to help demonstrate that children not only have a voice in the future but that they have the capacity to contribute to shaping a world where those most impacted are able to adapt and thrive in the face of unavoidable climate change.

Save the Children is no ordinary not-for-profit.

We’re ambitious, creative and outspoken. We stand up for children’s rights. We want all children to be educated, healthy and live a life free from violence.  We run development programs all over the world and, if there’s a disaster - like an earthquake, drought or conflict – we are there on the ground.

Where you come in:

In this full time maximum-term position, preferably based in Dakar, Nairobi, or London (but we’re flexible as long as you’re in the African time zones (UTC+3) and have good access to internet and flights), you’ll be part of our global Green Climate Fund (GCF) support team and be reporting to our global Principal Advisor for Climate Change. You’ll lead our ambitious plans to scale up child-centred community-based climate change adaption programming in Africa, identifying and developing strategic relationships with governments, donors, UN, multilateral organisation and driving quality program for the benefit of vulnerable children and communities impacted by climate change.

You will make an impact by:

  • Developing and overseeing a strategy for the continued growth of climate change programming in Africa, focused on developing a pipeline of GCF projects and programs
  • Leading or providing technical oversight of the development of GCF project concept notes and funding proposals in Africa
  • Supporting the development of a child-centred climate change advocacy approach for Africa
  • Supporting our country offices and program staff to adopt evidence-based best practice for climate change adaptation programming

Does this sound like you?

You will be from the region or have lived and worked extensively in Africa. You have substantial experience in designing and delivering large scale community-based climate change adaption programs and understand how the global community address climate change through both policies and programs. You are confident and thrive in complex coordination settings with a balanced ability to go between the bigger picture to the details of designing and delivering quality programs. Your experience across Africa will enable you to effectively engage with governments and climate change stakeholders to identify ways of scaling up child-centred community-based programs.

This role requires:

  • Significant direct experience of designing climate change programs for an international organisation, preferably in a managerial role
  • A proven track record of successful implementation of climate change adaptation programs in development contexts in Africa
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Green Climate Funds policies, structures, and systems
  • Tertiary qualification/s in Climate Change, International Development, or related discipline
  • Highly developed communication skills, written and verbal, and the ability to present information clearly and effectively to a wide range of audiences
  • Fluency in English is required, French and local language(s) skills would be an asset

Working at Save the Children is more than just a job.

It’s the feeling of knowing that your work is contributing to making the world a better place for children and working with others who feel the same. We offer a competitive salary, a friendly and flexible work environment, and great career opportunities.
