Overview:

ZSL London Zoo’s Discovery and Learning department are looking for a seasonal Practical Learning Officer to join our team. This is a fixed-term post between the 13th April and 2ndSeptember 2016. During term time this role is part time, 3 days per week including Saturdays (between 28th April – 15th of July).  During the May half term (31st May – 3rd June) and summer holiday period (18th July – 2nd September), the role will be full time.  The successful candidate will also need to be available to start by 20th April at the latest.

Person Specification:

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following criteria: 

  • Previous experience teaching practical animal related courses including in an outdoor environment
  • Experience of teaching in either a formal or informal education setting, including activities where the principal focus is practical work (such as specific skill development, vocational training etc.)
  • Experience of developing high quality, innovative learning activities/events to meet specific learning outcomes and audience needs
  • Experience of working with children and communicating to a wide range of audiences
  • Experience working in a zoo, aquarium, museum or other animal related environment
  • Ability to carry out and demonstrate to others correct animal husbandry and management skills for handling collections
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to learn new skills and information within a strict time limit e.g. performance skills, handling different animals, working with different departments in ZSL
  • Available to work some evenings and weekends and Bank Holidays
  • Able to work in an outdoor environment and in all weather conditions
